Uneven Film

Saw this on tv recently. It had potential due to its strong performances...if only everyone would have known what genre they were in! This film has strong and mature subject matter, which calls to be treated as a drama and instead at times is played like a comedy through and through. The scene where this is most obvious is during the dinner shared at the home of the couple played by MTM and Ted Danson. All actors were in comedy mode here, and I couldn't understand why. Up to that point in the film, it had been a straight drama and quite interesting. After that, the film was uneven, going startlingly back and forth between drama, comedy, and confusion. Perhaps this was a defect in the writing, perhaps in the performances.

Another flaw is how quickly we're lead to believe these characters recovered from the shock of the husband's sudden death. Why on earth should I feel sympathy for a woman who claims to have been crazy in love with her husband of 18 years or so, when she starts dating his best friend almost immediately after her husband's death? This movie had the right actors for the roles, but they were seriously mislead in their performances.

I wouldn't call it dating. Part of the problem with the film is that it's not clear how much time has passed. MTM finds out her husband has cheated on her, and she calls the best friend to get some answers. He admits to her that he's had a crush on her for years. She smiles and looks semi-interested. Flash forward 9 months later, and the two seem to be having a deeper relationship, but it seems appropriate.

OP is correct, that scene at the dinner table is straight out of sitcom. Then you back to serious drama after the car crash.

Very uneven, which makes the whole film unrealistic.

I agree. There were some great lines/jokes in the script but on the whole it was unrealistic. Sam Waterston is hot though.
