One of the best films of all time

I cant believe how little this film is know in the USofA
In europe it is very well know and will be on British/ Irish telly once a year. This is a truly magical film that will stay with you for as long as the haunting harmonica theme. Jean and Its sequal Manon Des Source are not two films but part one and two of the same film. you really can't watch them in isolation.
It has everything Greed, revenge, murder, great local characters and an amazing twist.
and daniel auteuil and emmanuel bert are husband and wife or at least were so in real life poor old Ugolin got the girl
I CANT RECOMMEND THIS FILM HIGHLY ENOUGH 10 ON 10 FIVE STARS TWO THUMBS UP AND IT SPAWNED A SERIES OF ADVERTS FOR FRENCH BEER ON BRITISH TV sorry got the caps on

UPDATE: It's been over a year now since I've started watching foreign language films. It's now a passion of mine. I've watched over 75 films since I first posted on this thread and JDF remains at the top spot as my all time favorite. I've also found some amazing other FLF's but I suspect that JDF will always remain #1 for me.

Please check out my FLF list. I started watching FLF's because of JDF!

There are some gems listed that are of equal quality to JDF and are just as unknown to the IMDb viewing audience. As you will see from the list, I have a penchant for the French Countryside.

Sorry about the shameless advertising, but I cannot suppress my love of the film Jean de Florette nor others like it, and I want to help share these films with others!

Breathtaking from start to finish, with beautiful cinematography, mesmerizing performances and a wrenching story that will stick with me forever. I gave it 9/10, only because I'm extremely selective with my 10s.

So which movies have you given 10/10 ? Just curious!

I would have to definitely agree. From the scenery to the acting to the supposed simplicity of showing such deep emotions, it is one of the best. I just discovered the connection between the two, seeing Mamon FIRST, liking that, then realizing it was the sequel to JDF! Have always appreciated Gerard Depardieu French quirky acting but it is what it is. Just ordered it up on Amazon to have my own copies and to of course push it on my unsuspecting fellow foreign film aficionados. (Not that I know many, it seems sub-titles bothers most impatient people) If anything makes me focus even more on the ongoing story...The ending of Mamon was so poignant, gave me goosebumps!

Enjoy!

I saw this film for the first time many years ago. I have watched it every time it is on the tellie ever since. Watching it again right now on SBS in Australia.
Maybe because we understand the harshness of the Land without water, it feels so true. The follow up is also very good, both should be seen as two halves of one film.
It has everything in it, and for me is a 9.
Please watch it if you haven't seen it before.I grew some beautiful Carnations after watching it for the first time, inspired by the ones grown in the film.
