Why do so many Yanks have trouble with this film?

1. Residue of some cold war mentality (USSR = Evil, this film was made by the USSR, ergo it is bad/wrong)

2. Americans are not involved which upsets them as they like to think they were the center of attention in W.W.II after 1941 and won it by themselves.

Any other reasons?

Why do you resent America so much?

It's quite a lovely place to live with variety galore.

Cheers!

Joestone99uk,
if the film has more than a few lines of subtitles, you lose the American audience. And yes, many [uninformed] Americans think it was solely the United States that won WWII.

reply

It's true my country has a lot of uneducated, uninformed people. But it also has some of the brightest. I have been watching films/tv with subtitles for years. Even English speaking movies, With English subtitles. I watch a lot of foreign films as well, never dubbed, just subtitles. So it's not beyond everyone in USA.

reply

I'm a "Yank" and gave it a 9. I also am well aware that it was the Soviets that did the lion's share of work beating the Germans. (They didn't do their share in the Pacific though.)

The composite US rating of 7.4 is lower than the non-US 8.4, though 7.4 is not a negative rating.

The movie is about Belarus partisans, not the Red Army. I think the movie is too long with the immolation going on too long and the newsreels (some running backward) as Florya shoots the "Hitler Liberator" framed picture over and over and over and over is unnecessary.

I wonder how the small band of partisans managed to ambush the SS unit, most of whom are dead before the advocate of Slav genocide holds forth.

I think that Tarkovsky's (1962) "My Name Is Ivan" was plenty harrowing and less propagandistic, and MUCH shorter!

What do you base your premise that Yanks have a problem with this film on? The film has an 8.2 rating on IMDB which is composed primarily of Americans. Which strongly indicates that most Yanks who have seen this film liked it.

primarily non US actually - only one in four are US.

US users vote significantly lower - 7.2 vs 8.4
in fact 20% of US give it a one. Only 3% of non US do.

reply

3) What if these are some vote-bots to downvote this movie, so that another movie takes its place in the Top250.
Maybe to promote the other movie's box office or other sales. (e.g. Inglorious Basterds)

4) Or maybe it is some of these crazy boycotts / "social activisms", which target this movie, because it is not against abortions. Those strange phenomenons seem to originate and spread in the US most often.

5) Maybe it's the "US makes the best movies!!!! So I must downvote non-US movies"-mentality.

6) Or maybe it is "I like it. But I think it should be an 8 and not an 8.3, so I give it a 1 to affect it more"

reply

7.2 is a positive review. That indicates that most Americans didn't have a problem with the movie but in fact liked it quite a bit. The premise of this thread is false. Most Yanks do not have a problem with this film.

reply

18.6% of US voters gave it a one, while only 3.2% of non US voters did. - incidentally far more non US than US voters.

That's probably the 'so many' that the OP refers to.

It is an interesting anomaly.

Probably not enough action for a 'war' movie...or should I say it's too 'hallucinatory' for some people.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

This film describes fighting between two of the worst governments on the planet at the time. After the war, one became better and the other got even worse.

The photography was beautiful, so I gave it 7/10.

jm,

Nearly all (educated) Americans know that the USA was at most a bit player in the European theatre of WW2.

Your opinion is not even wrong.

For your own safety, I advise not sharing that opinion with an American WWII vet who lost many fellow soldiers, Marines, army air corps, and naval personnel in European fighting.

reply

Wow, you really need to educate yourself. You're extremely ignorant.

The Communist rap sheet with 100-150 million dead is unsurpassed and unequaled.
The human race has killed far more than that, and you're a member of that group.

Next time we will be carving up Russia instead. Like it was supposed to be in the first place, and would have been all for the better.
Hope you get your war sometime buddy, maybe you'll get to mow down some Russian kids so they won't grow up into stinking commies that you'll have to kill later.

Don't forget to smear some blood on your face so you can feel like a man for about 5 minutes.

I'm a "yank" and I didn't have any trouble with this film. I actually gave it 8/10.

So your point is invalid.

reply

I'm a "Yank" and like this film quite a bit.

The o.p.'s interest in the cinema tastes of American viewers is not uncommon amongst some (often times from the UK) who seem to obsess over what we like and don't like (more appropriately what they believe we like and don't like). Note the assumptions he made based upon his own skewed beliefs.

Actually, US-based viewers gave this film a lower-than-average iMDB score, although there is no basis to formulate a reason why.
