song: a nightingale sang in berkeley square

I think the singer is an Isreali...does anyone know how I can get that song from the movie? It's in the credits and she sings it when the two main characters are dancing at an outside party at night. There is no soundtrack I don't think.

I have the song in an album from Past Times magazine (UK) but I have no idea if they have an internet site. The album is entitled You must remember this )))

reply

Too bad, there is no soundtrack for this movie. The best you can do is get Billy Holiday's or Ella Fitzgeralds' version. I don't know if this will help.

With music by Eric Maschwitz, this was an extremely popular "soldiers'" song during World War II, especially in Britain. Similar tunes were "The White Cliffs of Dover," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Underneath the Arches," and "Lilli Marlene," originally a German song, but made famous by Marlene Dietrich's rendition for the Allied troops.

Try Harry Connick, Jr.'s version from the "We Are in Love" album. Exquisite.

Will look for that! Thank you, I just love Harry Connick, Jr. Did you see him in Memphis Belle? '-p

Vera Lynn's rendition is indeed the best-known one for "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square." The Israeli singer in the movie does an excellent job, and her name appears in the credits at the end of the film, which I just saw earlier today on TV. I cannot understand why IMDb did not include it under Other Crew, when they saw fit to include Alexandre Lagoya as guitar soloist.
However, all anyone who is interested in establishing her identity has to do is either watch, buy, or rent the recently-released DVD.

Did you ever find the name of the singer or a recording?

reply

There is a version of "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" performed by Mindy Smith. The album name is "Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs." Try that one, is also very good!

Anat Ben-Yehoshua. It took me a couple of hours, but I love a challenge! No CD, but I downloaded from a VHS copy of the movie. [email protected]

I have the Sinatra version on the GREAT SONGS FROM GREAT BRITAIN CD. This was the album Frank recorded at CTS Bayswater at the end of his world tour for Variety Clubs International chidrens' charities. He was also doing concerts at Royal Albert Hall. Needless to say the THE VOICE was tired by all this effort and was at about 50 per cent of its normal width and richness. He joked when he broke down,'We gotta stop sleeping outdoors!' The Robert Farnon arrangements were exquisite to say the least.

I would also recommend the Manhattan Transfer version. You can get it on Amazon.

It's on their Mecca for Moderns album and a very nice arrangement. Accapella.
