Is there any explanation for the start of the demon outbreak?

I feel like I missed something. Sally is watching a horror movie on TV when the demon on the screen comes through and attacks her, then possesses her it seems. I didn't notice any kind of explanation for this happening, though.

Maybe the demon just felt an affinity for Sally since she was kind of a demon to begin with.
