A remake with The Rock?

That is utterly bollocks! There is no way Dwayne Johnson can replace anyone in the remake of Big Trouble in Little China! AH MEDIOCRE HOLLYWOOD!!! I had enough of this remakes. There is no point in going backwards. What is done is done. Period. We need fresh ideas not milking out classic films.

With Brad Bird's Tommorowland being not as successful as Disney wanted, it goes to show originality is a lost cause in Hollywood and dying away. Maybe you get a few original indies and some original smaller budget films a few times a year but rarely anything on a large budget scale. Even look at Jupiter Ascending and how much of a flop that was, and it was a disaster.

The only original film that I have seen is Fury Road. I know it is a reboot of Mad Max. But the story is original, not based on other source.

I actually think if they are going to do the remake that The Rock is a pretty decent choice - he's got the charm, charisma and can do comedy. While he doesn't really fit as a direct replacement for Kurt Russell he could work as "Jack Burton" if seen through fresh eyes. Sort of similar to his character at the start of Get Smart, looks the part then walks into a wall.

Hmmm no. I'd rather see a sequel with Kurt Russell instead of a bloody remake with an actor who is the heat of the moment.

reply

Oh I agree, I'd rather they just not remake a classic, even with Kurt Russell! There's no need aside from greed as usual!

I had enough of the bloody remakes. This movie (or any other) should not be allowed to be remade. We need original ideas, not going backwards. That is most irregular.

I do 100% agree with you hailhydra86, I"m getting tired of the remakes, shows a lack of creativity within this decade. However, I've watched Big Trouble in Little China many times, and I think that this may actually be one of the best movies to make a remake. There's so much Chinese history and folklore that would be very interesting to see. But, knowing how Hollywood is, they may cut out the best scenes that make this movie great. If this movie has great writers, and a great director, there is a slight chance that this will be a decent film. If not....then the original movie will still be deemed as being the best.

As bad as remaking an inimitable slice of fried gold like BTiLC is, somebody aping Kurt Russell's awesome performance is an even greater travesty. I can just hear the producers, "That Burton guy was kind of an idiot in the original, let's make him more of a hero..." Not a flippin' clue.

The day this releases in theaters is the day that film has died. And I really enjoy the Rock's stuff for the most part.

It's a full moon . . .

Its not as if they're remaking high art. Get real. It is just a shallow popcorn flick. Yes, its great. Yes, its fun, but at least they're not remaking actual cinematic masterpieces like Citizen Kane, 2001, or 8 1/2 (which are all boring for Carpenter fans).

Besides, as long as Carpenter gets a paycheck, he's happy. He honestly doesn't care about remakes.

The original is not a classic ! It is a uneven mediocre misfire ! Wizard of Oz is a classic !

reply

I would rather a sequel ! double team Kurt and The Rock together ! that makes more sense rather than pissing off fans of the original !

reply

Perhaps is not a classic as Casablanca or Gone With The Wind. But, it has a cult favourite status. But that is besides the point. Remakes should not exist. We need original ideas. Going backwards is most irregular. What is done is done. Nor film should never be remade. No matter how bad is. Period. I'd rather see a sequel with the original cast and Jackie Chan as a replacement of the late Victor Wong.

I think this is simply the point where we need to give up on Hollywood and simply stop bothering to watch movies. Stick with books. Play PS4 or X Box. I don't know, maybe just go fishing or something.

I think this is literally the death of motion pictures as an entertainment concept.

reply

This will fail so hard I think.

I don't think it was a huge BO success anyways. It did ok but gained a huge status on video.

The Thing flopped HUGE in theaters but also became a classic.

Hollywood is going to do what it's going to do, doesn't mean we have to watch it.

I prefer escapist adventures in the vein of big trouble but think it is a misfire ! Uneven as adventure unfunny as comedy overall a failure !

Yup. I've been shaky on movies for a while now. There just hasn't been anything I REALLY like in a long time. This is where I just give up. Make remakes, make sequels, make crappy comic book movies... I just don't care anymore. I'm simply no longer going to pay to see them. I can go for a hike. I can play PS4. I can practice guitar scales. I can read a book. I don't need to watch movies any more. It's like going to a restaurant where the food is always a little bit worse than the last time you went. Finally you order something that sucks so bad you think, "Screw it. I don't care how close to my work this place is, I'll either pack a lunch or drive somewhere else."

This is my personal cheeseburger that tastes a little rancid from Hollywood.

reply

This was inevitable and it will be forgettable and crap like all the other JC and other remakes because they singularly every time fail to get what the original was all about and special.

Anyway, for damage control the Rock shouldn't be Burton but another character and have Russell cameo if he can't co-star, have Cody Carpenter do the soundtrack, keep the b-movie aesthetic with sets and costumes, forget all that lets have another sterile CGI bore with a bunch of personality devoid nobodies.

reply

Yes, i could not believe my eyes just now when i read the headline that they were looking at a remake starring THE ROCK.

I mean, what the friggin' hell?
