The best seasons were 3 and 4, the years that focused on her relationship with Bill, their marriage and the birth of her baby. I can understand that perhaps she felt she had done all she could with the character, but I would have liked to have seen her in one or two more episodes visiting after she left. At least we got her in the first episode of the sixth season, although no explanation was made as to why she didn't return.

I love seasons 3 & 4. One of my favorites is when she has her baby and Dolly Parton is in her dream.

I agree. The best Charlene seasons are when Bill showed up. My favorite episodes of the whole series are "I'll Be Seeing You" when she dreams she was back in the 1940s and thinks Bill has been shot down and "Second Time Around" when Bill is having second thoughts about Charlene. That episode ends with one of the most romantic TV comedy scenes ever and the great, great song "You Don't Know Me."
And let me add that Charlene's wedding dress is probably the most beautiful I've ever seen on or off the television. I think it was probably modeled after Grace Kelly's.
I remember reading or hearing back when Jean Smart left the show that she had just had a baby which contributed to her decision to leave.
