Great Crime Story Moments...

Great use of a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) when Torello's men went after Luca at the Lucky Star

Frank Holman grabbing a whole stack of newspapers to taint the jury

Frank's semi-voluntary rejoining of Luca's gang at the sign graveyard
"No Frank, you're in Hell with the rest of us..."

Torello charging the mad sniper (one of the few non-Luca focused episodes)
a gun in each hand...

Manny Weisbord's great speech to Luca about how he's mismanaging the empire

After Cory Luca tells her new guy, "Ray used to love that drink"
Ray shows up from behind the curtains and says, "He still does"

Luca saying "goodbye" to his Chicago ganster pals/rivals by killing
them ahead of his move to Vegas

Anyone else???

From very early in the pilot, when the armed robbers and their hostages are about to take off to the airport in the car Torello arranges for them. Torello leans in the window and calmly says to the leader, "If anything happens to these people, I'm going to find out what you love the most and I'm going to kill it. Your father, your daughter, whatever."

Then in the first regular episode (Final Transmission), Torello whispers something unheard by the viewer in the ear of the fiance of one of the women killed at the beauty salon. The fiance says "You promise?" and Torello just nods.

Here's a couple for me:

-The first instance of David Abrams acting as Luca's attorney - it's great to see him as a Bad Guy all of a sudden.

-When the two rookie cops follow Max Goldman to the airport and get shot to hell and then burned alive in their patrol car.

-The fact that Manny Weissbord received the first heart transplant in history (and as far as we know it was 100% successful).

-Frank Holman becoming a successful singer after being a low-rent, low-IQ thug up to that point.

-My favorite spot had to be how they wrote out Luca's smarmy attorney Steve Kordo with Goldman giving him the gun and then 'saving' Luca by throwing Kordo out the window. A good way to end the life of my least favorite character of the series, except maybe for Kori Luca (where was she in season 2?).

Interesting that you didn't like Steve Kordo that much - I thought it was interesting to have a consigliere type character with a real financial background.

Shockwaves (Luca returns):

Lt. Col. Milton Dance: "THIS IS THE OFFICIAL POSITION OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT!!! Mister Luca is not to be harassed in any way. You are free to go... NOW."

Torello: <stares down Luca - spits on the floor>

(friggin' classic - that whole episode is friggin' classic)

Final line - same episode:

Torello: "I don't want just you anymore, Ray. Well don't you get it, Ray? I REALLY don't. I want it... ALL."

my fav is the previously mentioned Torello/Luca shootout on the vegas strip. i was only maybe 13 when this aired the first time so it was years before i realized that scene which in is the best episode of the series is the single ep michael mann directed. back then i didnt even know what a director did, but i knew i loved that epic confrontation..

My other fave CRIME STORY moments: (SPOILERS!)

- "Justice Hits the Skids": Near the beginning of the episode, Luca and Phil Bartoli are talking in the latter's restaurant. Torello comes in, still quite furious for his pal being murdered, fakes Bartoli's goon into lulling him in a false sense of security, and WHAM!! Torello rams his fist into the stooge's gut.

- (same episode): Torello and the MCU close in on the heroin dealers that attacked Suzanne Terry (Pam Grier). In a scene that mimics the bar roust-ups in THE FRENCH CONNECTION and 48 HOURS, Torello and company crack down on the patrons, and even confronts a tranvestite who likes to rip off "johns."

- "Pilot": the department store shootout, and, "You posin' for pictures, or are you gonna pull the trigger?"

- "Top of the World": Torello and company finally find a legal trap for Luca. In a tense confrontation in front of Ray's casino, the gangster is denied access to his own place.

- "Blast from the Past": The final shootout, with James Remar taking David Soul hostage. Torello merely points his gun at the bank robber, and shoots him point-blank.

- "Robbery, Armed": Torello and Clemmons (both on a chopper) vs. the crew that shot Danny.

- "Moulin Rouge": Clemmons has black gangster St. John on his sights, saying, "St. John...you're a black man's worst nightmare," before shooting him.

Yes, but you forgot the best part - Clemmons quipped to Torello, "he looks a lot better with that third eye."

reply

Haha, good call there, pcventures.

reply

"Moulin Rouge:" "Where's St. John?" Torello: "He's with Walter." And then you hear the shotgun go off in the distance.

"Pilot:" the dept. store shootout was the reason we all became immediate fans of the show.

I really loved this show. There were so many great moments. Some were suspenseful, funny, touching or all of the above.

One scene that was funny to me was the episode when Torello and Julie are on vacation and he's ticked at the waitress for bringing him oatmeal and he says, Yeah that's right I ordered oatmeal because I hate oatmeal.

Later in that same scene when he and Julie argue about the place and his behavior, and he says, I'm going to go pay the bank robbers that run this place...

Also, earlier in the same show where the bellboy brings Torello his dry cleaned shirt and says it costs $28 and Torello gives him the shirt back and says keep it.

That vacation was hilarious.

when Attorney David Abrams and Suzanne Terry become a couple.

Stephen Lang and Pam Grier had great on-screen chemistry.

One great scene was when Suzanne returns and walk up on David with some chick in a club. He tossed cab money at the girl and told her to leave.

that was hilarious.

reply

Totally agree about Stephen Lang and Pam Grier. The scene they have together towards the end of (what ended up being) the series finale (Episode 22, Season 2) is incredible.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

Moulin Rouge was even better than that.
Danny-"Where's St. John?"
Walter...shouting in the distance..."STOP POLICE" "BOOM"
Mike: "He's with Walter."
