Spies Like Us Getting Remade

Come on Hollywood think of new ideas not reharsh old ones. Can't we learn from the Pink Panther, The Hicther, When A Stranger Calls, Black Christmas, and many others that were very bad films.

Here's the official news

When the studios head to the vaults for inspiration…. You never expect them to come back with an old Chevy Chase/Dan Ayrkoyd movie, do ya?

Inspiration has definitely dipped in Burbank, with Warner Bros championing a remake of a modestly successful John Landis comedy.

The film that introduced Donna Dixon’s buxom bosom the world, “Spies Like Us” (1985), a two-hander starring Chevy Chase and Dan Ayrkoyd as a couple of loser misfits who dwell in the lower ranks of the Central Intelligence Agency, is about to get the remake treatment. Warner teams with Imagine (yep, Brian Grazer’s a producer on it; change of pace for him, hey?) and Thunder Road on the pic.

Responsible for adding new life to the old concept are writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and Dave Mandel. The trio worked on the 2004 comedy “Euro Trip”, which wasn’t too bad, so ya never know… this might actually turn out all right.

My thoughts exactly. It worked for The In-Laws, as I remember.

while they are at it, remake stripes and caddyshack too. why not ghostbusters as well.

hollywood is in trouble and in need of some orginality.

Hollywood had its Golden Age. Now they're somewhere in the neighborhood of "recycled aluminum."

Please don't give them any ideas!

I don't even remember this being a big hit, so why would they remake it?

The Cold War context is part of the humor here...Most of the movie-going dick & fart joke crowd have no idea what it even was.

reply

this won't make it past pre-production, there is NO way this movie will actually make it to the screen

Angel of Mons:

you got it.
the whole film is based on the Cold War.

there is no Soviet Union anymore. there are no nukes pointed at each other a few minutes from liftoff. i.e. the central plot theme. but also very important for audiences who lived with the reality of nuclear holocaust. comic relief and a political message.

it might still be funny but it wont be the same thing. the message wont mean anything to modern people.

I dont think it was a big hit...but it did have a following. At the time it was released those corny jokes WERE funny. Im a fan of the great films, I have every film on AFIs top 100 except a few, Ive seen them all, and as much as it pains me to say it, I loved this film. Its not very funny, its kinda corny at times, but its entertaining. And lets not forget, Vanessa Angel is in it, and that dame is HOT HOT HOT. :)

Vanessa Angel in this movie was my first big movie crush. I couldn't keep my eyes off her.

Bosum Buddies introduced Donna Dixon to the world

I hope they do remake this movie. That would mean a Blu-ray release of the original!

The most logical casting I see is Vince Vaughn as Emmet Fitz-Hume and Will Ferrell as Austin Millbarge

reply

Please, not Will Ferrell. Vince Vaughn would be good though, I would love Jon favreau to be opposite him. But Hollywood would probably want a bigger name, probably Ryan Reynolds or something.

reply

after watching Spies again, I think that Mike Myers would be perfect for Milbarge. Aykroyd looks a lot like myers in this movie.

Here's my idea for a treatment for the remake:

The 2nd Pink Panther remake was better than all 9 of the original Pink panthers.

The Fly was better than the original The Fly.

Dredd was better than Judge Dredd.

Conan was not better than Conan The Barbarian, though.
