I felt bad for Jeff

The scenes where we saw his stepdad really did not give us reason to think that he was a loving stepdad, he seemed to be like the biggest A-Hole so it was easy to understand why Jeff wanted to be away from that man. His mum obviously love her son but she do not defend him against her new husband being an ass to her kid, the man in front of her said about her son "He is not eating with us tonight, I do not want to see his face" and she did not react one bit to it, that actually made her also a bit unlikable to me regardless of the scene at the end where they hug it out . At the end I felt the film could have helped with making Jeff stepdad redeemable, like a couple of scene where we see he is not a total jerk. Without this it, it feels like Jeff at the end just will have to deal with it and stay with that Toxic man as a stepdad.
