Peculiar

I watched this last night and it just left me scratching my head. Truly the most odd teen movie I have ever seen. It doesn't seem to be about anything at all and most of the characters are completely 2d or just annoying (Byron whatshisface, especially).

Not a bad film but very amateurish and, seemingly, without direction.

Haha. That's pretty much exactly the way I feel. Peculiar indeed.

I like it. It's unique to me cause it's the only 80's teen movie I can think of where everybody doesn't look completely tacky (except for Polly's hair). It's very unique that way. Jennifer Connelly especially seems to have completely escaped bad 80's trends.

it looks very true to the way the 80s really were.

It's a rather compassionate, gentle coming-of-age movie, examining love & friendship without artificial drama. I like its understated, slice-of-life approach -- it has the qualities of a good short story. And I especially like how the three leads are portrayed as normal teens, relatively happy but starting to feel the pangs & paradoxes of growing up. It's about teens, but it's not just another "teen movie," I'd say. A pity there aren't more films like it.

I enjoyed it. Jennifer in particular did a nice job navigating her way through her characters first teen relationships.

I agree. It had no narrative focus. It seems to be ensemble movie but it doesn't treat its characters equally. It also doesn't know who the main character(s) is/are - the treatment keeps changing over time. There's no overarching theme so it feels episodic. Definitely a disappointment rewatching it this week after 25 years or so of remembering it fondly. But, it did have some nice moments.

Agreed, a very awkward film. It's a shame because it has some really nice, memorable scenes but really doesn't hold together as a whole. It'd be a perfect example of poor script writing, direction and editing in that sense.

The first 10 minutes or so really give the impression it'll be a lot better too - there's some cohesion there - then it all falls apart into almost random scenes.
