Yes it is, hon. I was born in '73. And the movie sucked when I was 12, and it sucks 20 years later.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Westaz316. This film gets rightfully undeserving backlash for no straightforward apparent reasoning (at least, not to my knowledge). I saw this back in 1998 on a VHS when I was 7; this meant whatever I saw could be wound and rewound again, and again. To me, it holds a special place in my heart as a timeless tale of warmth, joy, belonging, and togetherness, a feeling that most live-action "kids" films now adays, especially "family pictures", seem to bypass, confuse, or forget. This film does what a number of Christmas Fantasy Films began to emulate: the "fantasy". It feels like an Historical Family Christmas Comedy/Drama, if that makes any sense. It touches on themes of upbringing, unconditional & unconventional compassion, helping those in need, love, belief, faith in one's self, and most of all, destiny.. that we can choose to follow our own path; a path towards enlightenment, a path towards a better life, a path to a brighter future, for everyone. I know like I'm sounding as if this turned into a paragraph-long sermon for some sort of masterpiece that gets wrongfully accused of being "too commercialized", "too adult, sometimes", "too weird", "too strange", "too 80s", "too much like watching a set", "too cheap looking visual effects", "too long", "too drawn out", "too boring".

Well, here is my final statement:

This film, to me, captures EXACTLY what Christmas is all about; not only that, but it can show young and old, children and adults alike, that with "a little magic", anything can happen (I know, a corny line, but here me out).. You just have to BELIEVE it will happen.. And ALWAYS hold on to faith.......

Final Grade: 10/10 --------- A glorious beautiful masterpiece that will continue to transcend the ages as One of the Pinnacle of Defining Christ-mas movies that shows every child should "never stop believing".

I agree, I was born in 73 as well and it was such a disappointment. I've tried to watch it a few times to see if it will grow on my like some movies will but nope it still is a let down. The plot is just super lame, Dudley Moore also ruined the movie for me. He's so out of place in this.

reply

i was born in 1989 and i absolutly love this film.
the film does not date to me. hell im happy my parents used to make me watch it and they were born in 1964 and 1966.
i dont think the film dates imo i think every year i watch it that it is still magical and give you the christmas spirit.

reply

Question - what year were you born? For those born in the late 1970's, this movie was aimed at my generation as we grew up as the same age as the kids in the film...for those born afterwards, this film is going to appear dated as you cannot relate to the toys of the time...therefore, for a much loved film for my generation, it's not a pile of "pure beep"...

It's not a pile of "pure beep", whatever that is, but it definitely doesn't do a good job of representing its then target audience, vis-à-vis tastes in toys. 1985 was the peak of G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man, My Little Pony, Care Bears, but what do we see in the film? Rocking horses, wagons etc. This is one of those hypocritcal messages Hollywood likes to put up on screen. It turns up in "Toys" another big budget bomb, "Fred Claus" which seems not to have bombed but should have, and by the the looks of it that Magorium/Emporium thing. These films suggest that toys are better when they are resolutely old fashioned things made by hand, rather than assembly produced for maximum profit using the latest technology. Good thing they don't make films like that, eh readers.

Of course, contemporary toys are alright if their company pays you money to be in your film.

reply

I like this movie, but I never got that part either. My mom and I watched it together recently and we were laughing about the dated wooden toys.

Anything I could have said I felt somehow that you already knew

reply

[deleted]

Err no, it's becasue the film would have had to go though a *beep* of legal work and probably money to use all those big names and products in the film. Old-fashioned toys are timeless and are simply a representation.

reply

Ursa fan....you are so correct, I was born in 1979 and grew up watching this film every Christmas, loved it!!!

reply

i was born in 1979 as well and i loved this movie as a kid... i just watched it again for the first time in years and was surprised at how much i remembered. sure, it wasn't the greatest movie and i guess by the mixed reviews here we can understand why it wasn't a huge commercial success, but i'm still into it for the sentimental value it offers. i was a huge fan of the original superman movies also produced by the salkinds so maybe that's part of why i enjoyed it so much...

reply

born in 81

gonna watch it again 1st time since 1987
when it was on ABC christmas eve night

hope it good as it used to be ..

reply

I have to disagree young man. Any movie about me has to have some redeeming qualities.

reply

I was born in 1981 and I remember loving this movie as a child. I can't watch it now. I have to agree with the original poster, it's terrible. As a child it seemed magical to me because I believed in Santa and I really thought this movie was real. I think kids today that believe in Santa would love this movie just as I did when I was a kid. And I don't want anyone to think that I just don't like it because its about Santa because I love both of Tim Allen's The Santa Clause movies. I just think that this movie didn't have a good plot and once I got old enough to where plots began to make more sense this movie just started losing it for me by then.

reply

You don't like this movie because of a poor plot yet you like The Santa Clause?

reply

i still love this film and im 20, im really upset if it isnt on at christmas its been tradition for me to watch it at that time of the year :D

reply

I would be one of those that dislike Santa Claus the Movie but do like The Santa Claus. At least The Santa Claus lets you know up front it is supposed to be funny and we're not to take it too seriously. Santa Claus the Movie starts out...well...seriously, showing who Santa Claus was before and how/why he was selected and was brought to the North Pole by the Elves. Then it brings us through many years of history...all rather seriously. Then, suddenly we're faced with a depressed elf leaving Santa Land and teaming up with John Lithgow's preposterous character. To me, that transition just doesn't work, given the direction the movie was going. It just seems...disjointed and changes course in midstream for no apparent reason. IF they were to make it about a disgruntled elf who leaves Santa Land (think...Elf) and hitches up with an evil toy maker, that's be one story and might be consistent. Or if they wanted to show the history of Santa Claus and some of the problems/antics involved, that's be another movie. But they don't seem to go together. At least that's how I see the problem with this movie.

my god its full of stars

yeah I was born in 81 and used to watch this movie about 5 times every xmas

just last year was the first time I have seen it in a good 16 years!! and watching it it was amazing I still could remember parts and lines and you think to yourself how bad is this really??

reply

I loved it when I was little. I was born in 1985, and probably watched it until I was 9 years old (even though I didn't believe at that point)

reply

I first saw this movie soon after I had turned 9 (I was born in December). At that point in time I definitely didn't believe in Santa, and I still liked it. Of course it helped that we were watching it at school, and at that age any alternative to actual classes is good enough.

reply

Ya know, a lot of kids will watch ANYTHING if you put them in front of a TV AND JUST BECAUSE YOU FONDLY REMEMBER something from yr childhood doesnt make it a good film. This movie represents everything that is wrong with big-budget Hollywood movies - it is all cookie-cutter made - a little of this, alittle of that but there isnt a real fable or real story - it's a mess. Dudley Moore seems embarrassed to be in it - the awkward "comedy" bits fall flat - Lithgow overacts like crazy - and just because they show Santa's magical work shop and the reindeer (who look awful even by 1985 standards) doesnt make it wonderful. Lame, by the numbers script, lazy direction. Bah humbug!

reply

I am with you, Santa Claus! I love all Christmas movies and watch them year round, whether they are about you or Scrooge or any other character connected with the holidays. I do like some better than others but I do not make fun of those viewers who do not agree with me.
Why don't people realize that all movies are a matter of taste?

reply

I was born in 1982 and love this movie, the best Santa movie ever. Watch it every Christmas, it's great. I'm guessing you're too young to appreciate it

reply

It doesn't matter when you were born. It's when you stopped believing in Santa, and if you believed when the film came out.

For instance, if I told you that I believed in Santa Claus until I was in fifth or sixth grade, you might think I was retarded. But what matters is how old I was those years. I was 14 and 15 in fifth and sixth grade.

reply

I was born in 1975 and I enjoyed the film as a child and still love the film now.........it is a good all round family film, not many films like it these days!!

reply

i was born in 89 after the film was even made and i watched it wheni was little and loved and still love it ne at 17 and i the movie is oh soo terrible as you think it is on EVERY level y did u watch it all the way through and waste you time whinig on about it on here,it's a lovely film!!

reply

I was born in 1990 and remember this film from before I was at school. It rocked. If it were'nt for films like this, Christmas wouldn't be the same. Right now im trying to find a dvd because the our tape we recorded it on got broken :(. It's a shame because the 90s christmas adverts were really cool, made Christmas seem cosy with all the warm coffee adverts. Now we ve just got argos and MFIs bad adverts.

reply

This movie is def 1 i think of wen i think of my childhood, i was born in 1985, and all i know is i loved it!
perhaps if i watched it now it may not hav the same magic but i dont think u needa trash it... sheesh!
I hear what u say bout the old ads! it gets to a point where its almost as fun watchin them as watchin woteva old movi u hapend to tape... haha.

I absolutely Love this movie.....i could care less about what others think ....

i will always love this movie along with Its a wonderful Life , Miracle on 34th Street!

to say this movie sucks is to say those other 2 examples i gave suck.

reply

Exactly mate, this film is golden memories, people who diss it just compare it to the modern stuff with all the SFX which weren't available back then. This film is the top Santa movie, no doubt, I'm 26 and have seen it since I was about 7, love it still, just the once a year, but that's all it takes

reply

you are all idiots. you think it's because you're young that you think this movie sucks. it's not. this movie just sucks period.

reply

I was born in 1980 and although I liked the film as a moppet, it's just cringe-worthy now. The two kids were so wooden (especially the boy) while Santa is a bit too stand-offish for my liking. There so many better Christmas films to be seen.

reply

I remember my mom taking my brother and I to see this movie on Christmas Eve in 1985. I loved it then as a child and I love it now as an adult and has become a yearly Christmas tradition for me to watch it every year.

reply

I was born in '84. I don't think it matters what year you were born -- more how you were brought up. I love this movie because it represents some of the happiest times in my life -- times when I wished *I could live with Santa at the North Pole and be homeschooled by Mrs. Claus.

Yeah, the effects are nothing compared to what's available now, and the plot got lost somewhere in the middle, but it's still a great movie. And it's still safe for kids and adults. Can't wait until my own baby is old enough to watch it!

reply

I was born 85 and I love this movie. I loved it ever since I was little, it was the only movie I could remember watching EVERY year. Of course if you are going to compare this movie to moderen movies it is going to seem a bit dated. However it has a great plot to it.

It is my favorite christmas movie before and now, and it always will be.

reply

I have had this movie on VHS ever since it came out. I'm surprised I haven't worn the tape out over the years. I was born in 1985 and still love the movie to this day. Yeah ok, there is no Santa Claus, but when ever I watch this movie I turn back into a kid and believe there will be presents under the tree for me from Santa lol. :)

I am watching a TV edited version right now and they cut out a lot of little things for time reasons. You all should definitely try and find an original VHS of it. Its even better! :D

This movie brings back many memories. I was born in 79, so I remember, as a child, going to McDonald's and getting the Santa Claus Happy Meals. In any event, I find the threads in this post humorous (and alarming). If you're watching this movie for the plot, then you're an idiot. This movie was aimed at children when it came out, so, why 20 years later, would it now be intended for adults. Just watch the movie to reminisce about the past; not to critique it.

reply

I'm so glad someone mentioned the Happy Meals. Did they come with books? I sort of remember them, and I think we had the whole collection. No idea where they are now...

And I agree with an earlier poster. This is a kids' movie, it's aimed at children, not adults. And if you enjoyed this movie as a kid, you will probably always like it because it brings back that little-kid-at-christmas feeling. If you've only seen it as an adult, it definitely loses something.

reply

I was born in 81 and I have watched this movie every year since it came out. I can understand that some people won't like it, but I wonder if it's the same demographic as the one that enjoys those crappy Van Wilder movies, and every other digusting comedy that comes out now. This movie is magic. Pure and simple. I guess it depends on what kind of person you are for you to enjoy it.

reply

I've watched this movie every year since i was like 1 year old. It has to be my all time favorite Christmas movie ever. In fact, my top 3 Christmas movies are :
1. Santa Claus the movie.
2. A Christmas Story.
3. Christmas Vacation

Sure, its not the best of movies, but it's a classic in my mind.

reply

I was born in the 90's [im 13]

And I found this movie extremely boring. I could not pay attention, I mean I have a short attention span, but that had NOTHING to do with it.

It was so boring, gosh.

reply

Oh, yes they came with books. I remember because I got my book and read it a million times before I even saw the movie. I had completely forgotten about the film - I haven't seen it in 20 years. It's playing on ABC Family as I type this. The minute the titles rolled it all came back. Seeing Claus in that fur-collared coat brought back the image of the book, and the movie itself. I have no doubt that the plot is dumb. And the effects were decent considering it was 1985. Dang, I feel old now. I remember my mom thought the movie was going to be good because she liked Dudley Moore. I had to be all of 4 or 5. I can't believe I even remember it. Oh, it has to be a horrible movie, but watching it now is making me so happy.
