Api was a nasty jerk

Zach should have shot Api whenever he had the chance. Api was a jerk. THe guy puts a gun on you and forces you to go drive you somewhere, and then chases you down? Zac should have killed him.

Political correctness would not allow that real and true characterization to be played out on the rich man's mass media however.

Having spent a year in New Zealand, it's quite shocking to see how different things were back in 1985(if the movie is any indication) in terms of racial tension. Today it appears a lot cooler. Api's character is actually quite racist, not politically correct at all.

I wouldn't call an unknown New Zealand movie with a low budget and three actors total "rich man's mass media" - I think you're just trying to find something to complain about.

Agreed. Except that what Joanne told Zack about the murder he committed was different from what Api told her; she fleshed out the murder he committed so that Api would seem innocent. Regardless, Zack should have killed Api the second he showed his soft underbelly since the rule of law no longer existed and Api had demonstrated his unpredictably violent character. To further this perception on Zack's part, there was Api's attempt to take his life by trying to run him off the road with the explosive laden truck. If the initial meeting with Api hadn't been enough to convince him to get rid of Api, that second incident should have. Of course, he DID have bigger fish to fry what with the grid's instability just about to destroy them all and everything.

But even before the grid's instability became apparent, I would have killed Api the first chance I had and then, because Joanne had shown her true colors by backing Api's play, sent that b**ch packing.

Yeah...right. With most of humanity vanished and the real possibility that you may never see another human again for many years, if ever at all... Killing the only two you have met seems a little silly.

I know one thing baby...you will survive

I couldn't agree more. Zack should have gone Omega Man on thier asses.

Of course Api was a nasty jerk. Dumb, insensitive, and dangerous. And that's exactly why the girl *beep* him.

Yep. And the scene where she's in the truck with Api after they almost ran Zac off the road, then they show Api and Joanne holding hands. Wow. Just wow.

I'm glad I found a thread for this subject, because it ruined the movie for me.

Good point. Why are women like that? I'll never understand... And she had the nerve to tell Zac, she liked both of them now. As if it was only her wishes that mattered.

You're so right lol.

I thought this at first, and I too felt that character was a result of racial prejudice, but in the end he redeems himself in telling Joanna that he was prepared to sacrifice himself. On the point about the murder, I assumed that at some point Api told her the full story, we learn of the true nature of the "murder" when Zac does.

reply

That's what I thought too, but after reading rtd3ws's post I now think she did actually embellish the story herself. Right before Api tells her about his past she is talking about you decide whether you like someone or not as soon as you meet them, as after that you either look for the good side of their bad traits or bad side of their good traits.

reply

Api could have of course told her that story off screen but he could have also told it and fabricated it or as you said: if could have been fabricater by herself.

The scene were Api was driving the truck with her, ignoring the walkie talkie and even almost pushing Zack of the road, he really was a nasty jerk in that scene but so was she, she seemed to enjoy that.

reply

Don't worry Zack will prevail in the end. The smart one always does. Once Api feels confident with the slut woman, Zach will have him where he wants him.

reply

Zack was the ONLY sympathetic and honest character in the film. The other two seemed like archetypes of a dangerous, racist man (Api) and Joanne (a two faced, back stabbing bitch who plays mind games).

That's why I'd like to think that Zack is actually in heaven at the end. Sure, he attempted suicide a few times, but he sacrificed himself at the end for the other 2 jerks and it makes me wonder that maybe his previous suicide attempts were because he had no faith or trust in the human race (like Api and Joanne).

The jerky things Api does are because he's asserting he's the alpha male over the scientist guy. Even though it is stupid stuff to do especially given that the world has been killed and in order to save the universe they have to think straight, he's all about the testosterone. And of course, the woman is more impressed by testosterone levels than someone who intelligently wants to save the universe, so she is won over.

This movie is just a commentary on the victory of testosterone over women.

reply

I thought it was a lot more than that. It was a great science fiction story that had commentary on the social structure of men and women in such a situation, never mind the fact that this happens in a world that hasn't had us revert back to cavemen due to natural or unnatural disaster.

In my lifetime I've also noticed a lot of men just being nasty and mean to me when there is a pretty woman next to them. And the girl liking him for that!
Used to think it was me but its in the nature of jerks and women.
Nice guys really do end up alone more often.

Yea, I've been the victim of this dynamic too.

Following that logic, Zac should also have killed Joanne as soon as she lowered her gun when they met.

No, everyone has a right to be a suspicious, paranoid survivalist in their new world, and Zac and Joanne just waited for Api to realize that they were not a threat and calmed down.
