Simlar Sci Fi Movies -Time Travel, Alternate Reality etc

firstly this is not just another post asking for other "last man on earth" style movies (yes i have seen the other posts)

I really enjoy these cool 80's sci fi movies.. anything related to space\time...
time travel, alternate realities, wormholes, time loops, scientists experimenting with that sort of thing
Something about them really fascinates me

I remember bits of old films i saw on tv when i was younger but cant remember the titles

So can anyone help jog my memory or recommend some films to check out

reply

I dont believe it has been mentioned yet but Interstate 60 (2002) is like a 1.5 hour twilight zone episode. It is actually loaded with big stars but never got the recognition it deserved because the studios felt it was not mainstream enough.

Timecrimes. It´s a low budget spanish sci-fi thriller about time travel. What If´s Hitchcock directs Back To The Future. One of the best movies about the subject time travel/fate. Really worth to check it out.

reply

That fits in the list and lot of people like that film but I hated it. For what it is worth, I purchased the DVD really cheap and it was DUBBED and not subtitled and maybe that ruined it for me.

I think Donnie Darko is the best out of the Time-Travel movies.

There needs to be movies based off the Sliders TV show. That show was good for 2 seasons and could make some great movies with the same basic concept!

reply

Dean, have you seen Triangle? I loved Timecrimes, and didn't love Triangle, but people who don't like the former seem to enjoy the latter. Worth checking out either way as it fits the themes of this thread.

TV: http://ihatemydvr.blogspot.com
LOST:http://eyemsick.blogspot.com

reply

Nope, I have not seen Triangle. I will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

BTW, have you seen Interstate 60 yet> It is a great movie and many of the people who enjoyed the Quiet Earth will also enjoy that. Dont let the DVD cover fool you. It is nothing like what the cover makes it look like. Horrible marketing.

There was another time travel related movie from new zealand back in the 80's called the navigator I believe. That one was good too. I also remember one called Time rider, about a guy that goes back to the old west with his motorcycle, I think just the sight of him with his helmet on had scared an old guy to death in one scene.

reply

LOL on the motorcycle guy scaring the old west person to death. I will have to check it out.

That reminds me of another 80s (maybe 90s) flick called Frankenstein Unbound where a guy from the future with a fancy talking car goes back in time and visits Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. This is great cheesy fun! I highly recommend it.

Also, I am glad to see this thrad still going. This is my favorite thead on IMDB!

This thread has already covered a bunch, but I did think of some others. These don't all concern time travel or alternate realities, and some were made before the 80s. Additionally, they may not share the same tones or themes you're looking for, but they all contain similarities to 'Quiet Earth' so I'll mention them:

Phase IV (1974)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070531/
A largely unnoticed cosmic event is altering the planet in phases. When 2 scientists go to a remote desert research facility to study ants who are building strange shapes and towers, they find themselves holed up with a third person, struggling to survive against the pending fourth phase.

The Last Wave (1977)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076299/
Australia is beset by unusual weather and sudden storms, which seem to carry great importance for the Aboriginals. When a tribal murder occurs during one of the heavy rains, a white lawyer reluctantly takes on the case. He becomes increasingly obsessed with both the murder and the weather, while also exploring for the first time the Aboriginal concept of Dreamtime. Dreams, mysticism, nature and prophesy collide in this masterpiece by Peter Weir.

The Sacrifice (aka Offret) (1986)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091670/
Believing the world outside his desolate village is engaged in nuclear annihilation and that life as he knows it will soon be over, a philosophical atheist begs God to return the world to normal so that his young son will survive in exchange for an act of complete self-sacrifice. When he awakes, it's as if nothing has happened and the man is forced to decide whether to honor his promise or not.

Millennium (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097883/
An NTSB investigator begins to suspect time travelers are somehow involved in the 747 crash he's investigating.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

Surprised no one has mentioned "The World The Flesh and The Devil" starring Harry Belafonte and Inger Stevens. Belafonte is a miner trapped in a a cave=in. He hears the digging and then it stops. He digs himself out and there are no people anywhere. He makes his way to an empty New York City. He thinks he's alone, but then meets Inger Stevens. Ok, it's the 1950s and they have a problem. For all they know they are the last man and woman on earth - only omg - he's black and she's white. Then Mel Ferrer shows up and creates a potential love triangle. There is then an utterly ridiculous ending sequence.

one of my favorite movies

12:01
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106188/

Barry Thomas is the average office worker. He becomes attracted to Lisa Fredericks who works in the same company. After work, Barry witnesses the murder of Lisa and goes to a bar to get drunk. Later that night, there is a storm and Barry gets a shock from a lamp's faulty power wire at exactly 12:01 am. The next morning, he realizes that everything is happening exactly as it did the previous day. The next morning the day is repeated again. It is now Barry's job--being the only person alive who is aware of this time loop--to stop the murder of Lisa, and stop the time loop or be caught in time forever.

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but Moon (2009) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/) is a really interesting watch. It is semi related to time travel but I cannot say how without giving a spoiler.

I must say thanks to previous posters in this thread as I have now acquired about 5 movies from the recommendations that I look forward to watching.

reply

I like movies with these themes. Check out these, I think they all rock but are all different.

The Triangle

12 Monkeys

Moon

Solaris, yeah the U.S. one. I just like it better, sorry.

Timecrimes(it's in Spanish, I hear there's a U.S. remake in the works.)

Donnie Darko. (DC version spells it all out more than the regular one so choose based on taste I guess. I like the regular verison better, just my opinion)

Another Earth

Primer

Sunshine(I don't mind the third act)

Lost(tv series, awesome but frustrating)

While not directly about time Travel, I found The Man From Earth to remind me of this movie.

The basic jist of the movie is a guy who is retiring from his job, he has friends come to his house and he tells them that he has been living for thousands of years and hasn't died.

The entire movie takes place within his house, but it's the story the guy tells and how it's done that grips you.

I highly recommend it if you like that sort of sci fi/find that story interesting.

I just watched Timecrimes(2007) and really have to recommend it. Great movie where time travel and paradoxes are at the core of the movie. It's not a gizmo to tell a love story.

Other movies that may have been mentioned earlier:

Hot Tub Time Machine(2010)
I hadn't expected much from this comedy, but was pleasantly surprised. A bit like Back to the future, but it's about a couple of friends who end up in the eighties.

Looper(2012)
Everyone has probably seen this now. It's cool, but why anyone would strike a deal where they're suppsoed to kill their future selves in the end, is beyond me.

Idaho Transfer (1973)

During a time of waning global resources, a crew of young researchers travel into the future to escape an apocalypse before the shutdown of their time transfer project. They find that some type of disaster has de-populated the Idaho region and, by implication, the nation or perhaps the world. Facing an unknown, barren future of abandoned towns and deserted vehicles; void of radio signals or any signs of air or land traffic, they encounter an abandoned freight train filled with bagged bodies. Their further discoveries of humanity's future fate is somewhat less than rosy. They also learn their time travel was not without significant costs to their own health. After one of the group travels further into the future, she encounters a family in a futuristic automobile; implying humankind has recovered from the disaster (or have they?)
