Missing scene?

I've recently picked up a copy of this crapfest but something is bothering me, namely how a lot of scenes don't seem to mesh well together. It's almost as if a lot of it wound up on the cutting room floor but later scenes reference a missing scene.

For example at the party for Kelly. We see Jason getting ready for Kelly's party and he brings her a gift. He mentions something to her about a mall and how she liked it so he got her one. They kiss making it obvious that they had a thing going. Later we see that they knew each other back in LA.

When was any of this mentioned earlier? It's just presented as is and without knowing more about the history these two share it takes you out of the movie because you can't figure out what's going on.

There are other examples of this but is this due to lazy writing or just poor editing?

Different versions. In the first version I saw on VHS after the dojo fight he goes home and sees she's at his house and then there's a montage of them being together and the mentioned pet shop scene.

When I got the DVD that part had been removed but there were some extra scenes that weren't in the VHS version. As for why I have no idea

It was lazy writing, especially bad rewriting. One thing that needs to be pointed out is that the budget was so small that they had to make compromises. Not only did the catering get reduced as time went on but they even had to remove a key scene that took place in high school.
