Short cut vs. so called director's cut

What's the story behind two different versions of Lifeforce? Its hard for me to believe that the long version is Tobe Hooper's preferred version, the short version is superior to me. For starters stupid usage of end title music killed the long cut for me. That's something I'd think producers would prefer. This film is also about details and the long version messed many of those details. This is one of rare occasions where I prefer short version (others being Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and Coppola's Apocalypse Now). If the short version of Lifeforce is actually "producer's cut", then I think this is in fact one time they were right.
