joyce hyser 28

i cant believe she was 28 in this film she looks so much younger. agree?

reply

Yeah, but it is not uncommon for actors, especially female actors, to portray characters much younger than they actually are. Sissy Spacek was 27 in Carrie and I believe Stace Dash was about 27 or 28 playing a high school sophomore in Clueless. Joyce Hyser does pull off a youthful appearance in this film and plays the role of an adolescent boy/girl very well.

Some people just hold their age better than others and when you dress them in youthful clothing and styles it's even easier. I am 34, everyone always thinks I am in my early 20's.

Same with me, i look alot youunger than my age too, I am 36 but a lot of people think i look like i can be in my mid 20's. It is probably because i aged well thanks to not smoking or drinking. ;)

reply

Nah, well maybe in your case, but I smoke and people are still amazed that im 39. In fact, I'll go as far as to say I've had very unhealthy habits. A lot of people in their 30's and 40s seem to be aging remarkably well compared to older generations. I'm not sure why that is.

It was better portrayed back then; just a nuance about the time and culture back then when people knew the meaning of innocence. I swear that's a sincere commentary and not intended as pretentious even though it may sound like it. Well, it's no secret I hold a special place in my heart for the 80s but it seems kind of absurd and a stretch when a 28 year old today playing an 18 year old because it seems there are no boundaries between the ages anymore when it comes to fashion or behavior of today's people.

I just saw this movie by chance and really loved it. I must still be reeling from the nostalgia of the movie and the comments.

Stranger yet, she was nominated for a Young Artist Award...

Let it lead me trembling, trembling...I own every bell that tolls me.

reply

really? she was 28? yes she did look a lot younger than 28. I thought she was like 19 or 20 in the movie.

reply

I didn't realize she was 28 when the movie was filmed. I've seent he movie 10 or 15 times now and never suspected she was so much older than the character she played.

reply

Of course she had to be a bit older so they would be able to show her boobs.

reply

Thank goodness for that!

reply

she couldve shown her boobs even at age 18... heck even younger, IIRC thora birch was 17 when she shot american beauty.

Fav boob scene in the 80's

reply

To show her boobs, all she would have to be was eighteen. Or even younger, with parental consent (see "American Beauty").

Leigh McCloskey (Kevin) was 30, and supposedly playing a college aged guy and he was believable. But yes, Joyce looked way younger than 28. Deborah was 27, as well and passed for a teen as well. I am just wondering now if older actors could get away with playing teens. It seems like our culture just doesn't allow for it anymore.

reply

She had some nice f'n tits!

I don't think "Kevin" was believable AT ALL. Terry definitely looked younger than 28, but I didn't buy Kevin as a college guy for a second.

I thought he was FAR from believable as a college guy, unless he was in his 10th year of Med school.

reply

She had a young face yeah, but that scene in the bikini you can tell she's a woman and not a kid. Absolutely fantastic body.

What's wrong with that?

She was 28 in 1985, which means she was 8 in 1965, meaning: she's a year older than Susan Cowsill. Interesting.

Agree...

This was very common in the 80's teenie movies, and hell even today, to have actors in the early-mid 20's portraying teens. The majority of the Breakfast Club was in their mid-20's.

In fact other than several movies with the Coreys (License to Drive, Lost Boys), I can't really think of any teenie movies of the 80's, where teenagers actually were teens.

And probably the worst offender was Grease:

Olivia Newton-John (Sandy) was 30.
Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) was 28.
Didi Conn (Frenchie) was 27.
Annette Charles (Cha Cha) was 30.
Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was 34!!!

Ironically, at 24 years old, John Travolta was one of the youngest of the Ridell High Schoolers, other than Dinah Manoff (Marty Maraschino) who was 20.

reply

I'm suprised no one mentioned that the guy who played Rick was 28 as well.

reply

Good point....the guy was freaking balding in high school for goodness sakes.

Not to mention Terry's boyfriend Kevin, who was supposed to be a college yuppie, was 30.

Arye Gross who played nerdball Willie, was 25.

reply

I knew a kid in Jr. high school who had a full-on male-pattern receding hairline already at the age of thirteen. He was also batshit crazy and you never turned your back on him.
