He tested his new battle invention at the start of the film and got some unlucky person killed, this always reminds me of the ED-209 scene at the start of robocop.

I was under strong impression, that it was done not by accident, rather intentionally by the person who ignited the cord. He basically killed the barrel roller.

After it happened, the creator of the machine said it will work, just that the fuse burnt too quickly. So this suggests it was an accident, but the way they didn't really care about the guy who got killed kind of makes it seem like it was intentional.

I love the similar idea to ED-209. :)

It struck me as an accident, not intentional. Since it was a risky venture, they must've used a "nobody" for the task; someone that no one really knew or cared about, like a vagrant (the medieval version).
