Frances

I can't be the only one to think she had feelings for Cay, and was in denial of them.
I think she wanted her, but wasn't able to accept what that could make her out to be. That's where all the jealousy and judgment came from.
I have sympathy for her character, but she was a hypocrite.

No, Frances didn't have sexual feelings for Cay. Cay reminded her of Cay's father and as Frances had already lost him she was desperate to hang on to the last reminder of him-Cay. Frances was also possessive of Walter (Cay's brother)for the same reason. Frances had a controling personality and wanted them to do what she wanted.

Frances was also homophobic so the love she felt for Cay was always warring with her disgust for her and that is why they had such a volatile relationship.

They're full of words, of how I want you...how...I love you

It was all she had left and they were close. It happens in friendships as well as relationships when it comes to jealousy. If two people are close and another person becomes close to one of them they feel their friend/relationship is threatened and sometimes act jealous. As if something you had was being taken from you she wanted to fight for what she thought was hers.

You're not the only one who senses this – I did as well. But it was a little uncomfortable, because I think she also thought of herself as a makeshift mother to Cay. That being said, I really like her character! And I especially like Cay's willingness to overlook her rigidness. That's beautiful – when one person is willing to forgive another person's flaws or inability to change (rather than holding a grudge), or when one person loves another person despite everything, that's just beautiful.

Throughout the whole movie though, there were parts of it that were a little cringing to me, because I couldn't relate. For example, I can't imagine being so outright affectionate with people who were just friends. Remember how Silver behaved around Cay at the beginning of the movie? It seems like even she had a crush on her! So, I guess that's the one aspect of the movie that I don't like. The rest of the movie, I loved!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Cay and Silver once had a fling. Its implied during the scene when they are in the bathtub together.

I can see why some people looking at the film for the first time that you could definitley read some sexual feelings from Frances towards Cay.

I think more so then her own son Walter (same father as Cay)that Cay reminds Frances more of her deceased partner, in terms of personality (which she mentions early in the film to Vivian) and probably one of the reasons she holds on a loser to Cay then Walter, who seems like a more artistic soul. And as you see in the film Frances is homophobic, as she said she'll never accept Cay's sexuality or Vivian for that matter but she'll never turn Cay away either.
