Spielberg's worst job (spoilers) (You really haven't watched this yet??)

He did a really bad job specifically with the actors (the cinematography, for instance was fantastic). They are really good but it's noticeably the director had them follow a script in a way that is touching when read on a book but feels awkward when taken to the screen. There was a lack on sequence and reacting naturally on certain situations. They "overacted" often (Jim Carry style, but dramatic) as if pushing too far to make the audience react emotionally.
For instance, when Albert is leaving to meet Shug for the first time he repeatedly returns to get a different item he forgets. No problem with that except that if someone iss assisting him -Celie- is not just going to have him return three times for the items he forgets, she -anyone- would just give him all three items at once. And let's not forget she's not exactly into making a fool of him.
What about the repeated arm stretching scenes? Nettie did it when she left, spitting some over-forced line; Celie did it in the same fashion when she was leaving... Who stretches their hand like that when overwhelmed?? Darth Vader does. Those stretching out arms scenes might look good while reading the book, but not on the screen.
What about when Shug approaches the chappel singing. Could a single person singing volume really overtake an entyre choir, and behind closed doors, and 300 yards away?? Come on.
It's like Spielberg tries too hard to move you with these tricks rather than actually moving you. I was left with the feeling he could do better than that (and he did in other movies).

No problem having an opinion relating to the film but you'd find yourself in a smaller number of viewers than the larger number that feel it's a better than average film.

good point!!! I actually made a thread about how silly that was

reply

Yes. It actually can. Jamie & Adam proved it on "Mythbusters".

wrong. they proved that a powerful voice can break glass NOT drown out a soloist's voice in a noisy church that's yards away with closed doors.

It's always those that can't do that criticize the most.

reply

so you need to be able to make a film in order to criticize one??

reply

Is that what I said?

I have never read the book, but the Color Purple is one of those movies that I can watch 100 times and it never gets old for me. There were so many powerful scenes in the movie, including the scene where the Sisters were separated when they were younger and were reaching for each other. They nailed that scene.

You realize that this scene is supposed to be funny, right? Why would she give him three items at once? She intentionally doesn’t remind him of what he is missing, making him come back to her again and again for help. She may not have been able to stand up to him, but she could get her little digs in now and then. And notice how, despite her help, he never thanks her. So this scene is funny, it reveals character and it reveals the state of mind of the characters. Hardly an example of poor directing.

You realize that this is a metaphor, right? In reality the juke joint would be in the backwoods somewhere, not so close to the church that they could hear each other’s music. And when Shug was leading the crowd of juke joint patrons to the church like it was a parade and we find out that the preacher was her disapproving father – well, obviously this is a bit of movie theatricality. Why would we want to see a dull father-daughter reconciliation when we could see an inspiring one full of joyous gospel music – God is trying to tell you something! Again, this is not an example of poor movie directing at all.

One definitely has to suspend his disbelief with regard to this scene, but it still manages to be one of the most emotionally uplifting - and triumphant - for me.

I do NOT agree with you on this one. I think it's one of Spielberg's best movies. Everything is RIGHT about this movie...the actors, the script (which by the way was aproved by the author, see the extras on the colectors edition dvd) the music etc etc etc. It is by far my most favorite film EVER.

The film was an uneven, sloppy mess because Spielberg castrated the novel to make the film more palatable to white mainstream America. The novel spoke loudly about racism, sexism, misogyny, sexuality and white folks from Flyoverstan didn’t want to see that in their shopping mall movie theater. Plus there was growing resentment for Spielberg’s success anyway...they weren’t about to reward him for making a movie about black people based on a controversial novel, Pulitzer Prize or not. And several prominent black men complained about the portrayal of black men in the movie, if they weren’t bullying, beating their wives or raping their daughters, they were cooning and engaging in slapstick pratfalls.

And Oprah was considered good in this? Wow, she plays this role in every movie she’s in. She slips into that stereotypical black vernacular that dies with Hattie McDaniel and Louise Beavers. NATIVE SON, BREWSTER PLACE AND EVEN BELOVED. She is a one note actress, much moreso than Whoopi.
