WHY ALL THE HATERS!!!??!!...

Does anybody wanna discuss how GOOD this film is? yeah you haters can go on your rants and whatnot about how you hate it, but i'd like to say I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!

It was so refreshing to see this film.I've heard good and bad things over the years and having only just finished watching it tonight (in 2011) this film is as relevant and thought provoking as it was in 1985. I can't think of a film that has come out this decade with this much depth, creativity and originality.

The dream sequences were immense and at the same nightmare-ish. The style of the film was superb. The way Gilliam portrays the the system and the dull world in which these humans must live. There was something very Metropolis about Brazil, which I relished.

Any thoughts on this guys??

Just because i rock, doesn't mean I'm made of stone!!! $+3

I agree completely. The plot is a bit sketchy regarding the character of Jill, as well as the terrorists, but I've loved this film from the minute I saw it. I spread the word about it whenever I get the chance. It's one of the funniest and saddest films I've ever seen. It's immensely applicable in our capitalist, penny-pinching society, and I just cannot get enough of it.

We're all in it together.

The only thing preventing me to give a 10/10 (I give it a 8/10) is the Jill character. There is NO WAY she would fall for Sam that fast, for no apparent reason other then he being a creepy stalker and she avoiding running over him.

"You keep him in here, and make sure HE doesn't leave!"

Completely agree with the OP! It's an awesome movie!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

It's better than Metropolis!

better than Metropolis!? a nonsense!

I can't rightly say I "hate" this film - because I haven't seen it. In fact I only just heard of it today, after seeing it mentioned in an article. I came here to check it out, and while reading the premise intrigues me, the trailer totally turned me off. I doubt I'll ever watch this thing. From the premise I expected a serious sci-fi tale, but the trailer makes the film look goofball.

This comment is about a year late. I watched the trailer right after the movie, and I found it pretty bad and very misleading as to the tone of the movie. It doesn't really convey the very dark undertone of the movie.

I love sci-fi, I love art fantasy films, I love almost all 80's cheesy low budget films, the trailer didn't scare me off, but I'm 15mins in and this is a comedy fantasy that makes absolutely no sense, it's not funny as it tries to be, and if it's not a funny comedy, then it fails trying to be a sci-fi fantasy that's for sure!.. And it still goes on another 2hrs.. ugh

Some people have no problem with the boot stepping on a human face forever.

I could only (hardly) stand 1 hour and a half of this movie packed with cliches. I get it this guy is clumsy, why do I have to see all his accidents? They are not funny at all and everything looks so f-cking cheap? I get the idea, but it's poorly executed and everything being grey is so DONE...we get it, the government is evil.

reply

Haters of this movie are utter retards.

reply

If your main criticisms are about clumsiness and cheap looks then I don't think you got what they were tying to do here. And no the message isn't that the government is pure evil, it's that it's inadvertently evil.

reply

Also, you kind of have to remember that this was made in 1985. If you go into it expecting everything to look "polished" as it is with movies made today, you're instantly setting yourself up for disappointment. Everything looks so "f-cking cheap" because everything was done practically and they still had to keep to a budget. And to be honest, this is one of the best looking films to come out of the '80s regardless, IMO. At least they no longer had the bouncing-rocks and stuntmen-in-bear-costumes to worry about. (Seriously, go watch anything from a decade earlier and then come back and say this film looks cheap...)

With regards to the cliches, again: this was made in 1985. A lot of the cliches in the film weren't yet considered cliches, or at the very least they weren't as, for want of a better word, overpowering as they are now. In fact, I'd argue that this film (and 1984 which this film pretty much takes its entire structure from) paved the way for a lot of the current dystopian cliches. Bottom line: context is everything, especially when it comes to anything to do with creative thinking.

Someday I'm gonna make a movie then laugh watching people over-analyse it

reply

Ummm no. Being made in 1985 has nothing to do with it.

reply

It's a nutty film. Even if you know why it was made, and understand everything about it, it's still a crazy movie. That's why.
