My FAVORITE episode from the 80's version :)

"Final Escape" from season 1. When the girl tries to plan a sneaky escape out of prison but it backfires in the end. Was a very freaky episode for me when I was a kid. I could only find a clip from the 60's version on youtube if you want check it out.

I too saw this episode when I was a little kid and it freaks me out TO THIS DAY!!! I actually didn't remember what tv show it was, I just remembered the ending, it used to give me nightmares. A few weeks ago I had a thought that it may be Hitchcock and viola, I was able to find it. I really want the dvd set, im not sure if they sell it for the 80's episodes. I also found the 60's clip on youtube and it's not nearly as freaky with the guy as it is with the girl

I saw on this site that someone was selling the dvd's on an ebay type site (I guess its not official, just dvd's he recoreded of the show from tv) I'm thinking about getting it

reply

Yeah sadly enough they have not been put it up for sale offically yet, so people are selling the sets taped from TV on a few different sites. This show still currently runs here in Canada on a few channel's so I catch an episode every so often when I'm home.

I just ordered the complete series off Ioffer for $29.00. Hopefully the quality will be good, but its 80 episodes so not a bad deal

I was reading some of the older posts on the site and its funny how much Final Escape is a favorite and how it freaked out alot of people who saw it!

I too saw the ioffer seller for $29 and took a chance and ordered them just a few months ago (august 2010) from the united states to the UK. They arrived after a week and although are US tv captures, then are professionally made and of good quality. If you see them on there again, then have no hesitation in ordering them as they come on 8 DVDs and contain every episode from the 1985 series.

I do not scare easily AT ALL! But, one night when I was babysitting, I was up alone and watched the 60's episode of this (as I always watched Hitchcock shows). But, when the end came and I saw the gravedigger in the coffin with the man who wanted to escape, I had the hair stand up all over me (and I can't remember another time that has again).

And I got a claustrophobic feeling all over me. I still consider it the BEST episode ever! I will never forget it and I still tell people about it...45 some years later!

LOL - Only episode I remember from the show and one of my favorite short stories on a tv show ever.

Is this the one where she was in the coffin? If so, that was my favorite too. I was 13 at the time and it was very spooky. I still remember her screams.

This shorter colour version of Hitchcock had completely escaped my memory...until I was googling "person in hiding coffin escape plan dig-up dies". Now it makes so much more sense, I'm willing to bet a lot of my childhood memories of sitting on the couch *beep* scared will be episodes from this series.

I've thought about this for years...I also have a vague memory of another where a girl gets trapped in a swimming pool and drowns. I believe glass covers the surface preventing her from breathing.

I can't wait to watch this again.

Now for the point of my post - can anybody give me the broadcasting time for this. It would've been around 85-89 - I remember being young but certainly not 12/13 more like 9-10 which would've been 85-86. As we all know memories are completely unreliable things :)

It would've been UK terrestrial TV too - probably channel4, luckily only 4 to pick from in those days :)

Thanks in advance.

Just to throw it out there too - some other series that I re-found that scared the Hell out of me where the Night Gallery pilot with Roddy Mcdowall. The Monster Club, Beyond the Grave and Tales That Witness Madness...and laughably Hammer house of mystery and suspense, the future human dolls trapped in the house with the candy slime bubbling menacingly in the heat :)

Peter,

I remember a film from 1978 called Legacy or The Legacy. It starred Katherine Ross from The Graduate and Donnie Darko, Sam Eliott of Roadhouse and The Big Lebowski (among many other films) and Roger Daltry of The Who. It was about potential heirs to to mansion being killed off one by one....by some mysterious entity.

Another thing was I believe was a scene from Lethal Weapon 1 where the bad guy get thrown into a pool that is covered by plastic and he gets entangled and dies.

Definitely The Legacy with Katherine Ross. I had asked about it on here & someone let me know. I remembered it for the same scene you did.

reply

I know you posted this a very very long time ago, But yeah there would of been 4 channels on terrestrial TV yes-But if you had Sky TV which we did back in 86 you had many more channels

reply

No. The man in the coffin was a prisoner who wanted to escape. It's the best Hitchcock episode ever. I won't give you any *spoilers*. :-)

Being a HUGE Cary Grant fan, I loved the movie "North by Northwest". When I saw the AHP episode "South by Southeast" and saw all the little bits that were taken from the movie, I loved it.

reply

Yep. Final Escape was my favorite episode too. Very well done.

Man From the South was really good too.

I hope this gets released someday on DVD.

reply

1) Final Escape- man, Season Hubley can act!

2) The Man From the South- best cast ever! John Huston, Kim Novak, Tippi Hedren, Melanie Griffith, and Steven Bauer.

3) An Unlocked Window- Annette O'Toole is so good in this!

4) Prisoners- I think that was the title, the episode with Cristina Raines and Yaphet Kotto where he plays an escaped criminal who breaks into her house. That twist ending was so effin' clever!

I'm late to the imdb message board party, but I'm glad to see someone else new here too!

Final Escape for me too. That was so memorable. Season is awesome.

Since then, I've been watching a lot of others -- and they're so familiar too. Like the end of "Revenge" with Linda Purl and "Method Actor" with Martin Sheen and Parker Stevenson.
I love the original shows, but I have a real affinity for the '80s series too. Growing up years, I guess.

reply

I agree with you also...fantastic episode!

reply

Creepy as fûck when I was a kid. Haven't seen it since though.

When it premiered in 1985 I cringed during The Man from the South segment. I was too young to have seen the original Steve McQueen episode. I couldn’t get myself to watch it through the first sitting while John Huston’s character wielded that meat cleaver.
