Karen Allen, Terrible Styling?

Look, I think Karen Allen is lovely. She did a great job with the film. She's so cute. Gorgeous eyes, too.

SO. My question is: did she piss off the film's stylist and/or costume designer or something?? Throughout the film, she has the most unflattering hair ever and her clothes... Baggy, shapeless, gross. Most of the *extras* were styled better than Karen in her gigantic jean jackets and mullet styled hair.

Since Karen is really super pretty with a great body, why such awful clothes, makeup and hair? Wondering if anyone else felt the same way. Maybe this is a mid-1980s thing?

1980's clothing was the pits...huge shoulder pads etc. made it very male and unsexy...seems I read that one of the famous designers looked for models who would be no more than a coathanger. To really follow the story line, though, how did she pack all those newly purchased French designer dresses into a shoulder bag and carry along a rabbit to boot? Suspension of disbelief became impossible.

It was intentional to show she wasn't of his world and he wasn't of hers. That's why she was a nursery person and he was a big city sophisticate. That's the point of the scene where she puts on a dress from her friend and he admires her in it.

^ This one got the point. It’s the central point of the film too. She’s an American midwest country school teacher and he’s a sophisticated Parisian bourgeois banker. Her clothes improve once her romance gets going too.
