Why is Kyle so blase about 1984?

Great movie, still in my top five, but one thing that's bugged me for years is how Kyle seems to be indifferent to the non-nuked world he's sent back to. If I grew up in the nuclear holocaust hell he did, I'd be commenting on it, at least once, to Sarah.

Anyone else think the same?

Don't you remember? When they hide in the sewer he talked about the apocalyptic future to her, after she stopped him to talk while heal his wound, when he say that John's father died before the war. Watch it again.

No, I don't mean his future, I mean why doesn't he comment on the CURRENT world. The non-nuked world! If I was him I'd be amazed. Given how awful his world is...

But I get why Cameron dropped the scene; maybe it was a bit too cheesey or just didn't flow right.

Sort of off topic: In the TV series 'Sarah Connor Chronicles' one of the characters was Derek Reese, the older brother of Kyle who also got sent back in time with several other fighters to set up a 'pre positioned resistance cell'; he did comment how the
first thing they did after finding clothes was to go to a food court in a strip mall-in the future the mall is a irradiated ruin but in the past, there is the nirvana of cheap chinese food--they all ate until they became sick to their stomachs.

I guess the series allowed more time to delve into more mundane aspects of their lives.

"If I grew up in the nuclear holocaust hell he did, I'd be commenting on it, at least once, to Sarah."

Kyle wasn't completely blase about 1984. If you've seen the deleted scenes with Kyle and Sarah, he makes his feelings about 1984 known: "I don't belong here... I wasn't meant to see this." He's holding a blade of grass and looking around at the woodland as he bursts into tears.

reply

And that's why Cameron probably cut the scene: it cut the momentum too much & showed the *beep* in Reese's emotional armor too soon.

Ah that's super interesting - I didn't know that! Cheers for sharing.

They should have kept that scene and the OP makes a great point.

If I remember the novelization correctly, he splurges on a bag-full of Snicker's bars or something like that, since he'd never had chocolate, and is mesmerized by a fashion model in a magazine, since he'd never seen a female that look that way.

"Aren't you a little strong for a lady? I'm calling wang..."

Also very interesting. Would like to read the novelization if I could get a hold of it. Will have to do some googling. :-)

Indeed, especially after the sewer scene it was that right moment when he should have show somekind of sentiment, emotion as the camera turns onto an untouched green territory, and they go through it. If I was him I would show some real deep emotions seeing that as in the future non of these exist anymore (based on "flashbacks" in the movie).

I will say it does seem weird to me how he won't eat any of the good stuff that is available in our world. I mean seriously, he mixes corn syrup with some other chemicals and calls it a meal?

"1-800 Spank me? I know that number." Scott Calvin, The Santa Clause.

reply

He's using the corn syrup to make explosives, not to eat.

Hes a soldier on a mission.

In the tv show his brother is part of a team which is sent back and he says that they spent theyre first week binge eating candy and junk food.

reply

There should be a scene where he says "so this is what we're fighting for".

I thought it was a bit of a shame that the "No Place For Me Here" scene got deleted as it added another dimension to the character of Kyle Reese. Still a great film and a great performance from Michael Biehn as Reese, but a minor nitpick.

I highly recommend watching the "terminated" scenes. You might even be able to find them on YouTube. One scene is where Sarah is talking about hot dogs and according to some stories, Kyle thinks she's talking about killing dogs and eating them. They are making the pipe bombs while she is talking about this stuff, then she starts saying how she wants it to be "over" for them so they can begin to live a normal life. I used to think it wasn't all that effective a scene, but Kyle says his whole life has been war when Sarah remarks, "Everywhere you go, you bring your war with you. There's nothing else in your life." And I agree the scene where Kyle cries after really looking at grass, trees, etc is also a really great one for showing he wasn't nonchalant. The novelisation by Randy Frakes and William Wisher is great too. I've heard it read online on YouTube as well.
