Sylvester Stallone's singing

Sylvester Stallone was so good looking in this movie. His rendition of Tutti Fruiti was lousy, but when he had some decent songs he really sounded as good as his brother Frank.

Hm, now you ladies got me curious about seeing this movie. I think I'll check it out. But it might be almost impossible to find it in any video store wether you rent it or buy it.

I thought Sly's singing was okay when he and Dolly sang together.

Solo wise...that's another story. The two songs he was horrible on early on were LOL moments where you just don't care how he sounds.

i thought this film was absolutely hilarious. and i still think sylvester stallone is under-rated as an actor.

You guys are crazy. I'm a huge Sly fan, but his singing (and stage movements) were dreadful, and it was actually quite embarrassing to watch. He looked as out of place as John Travolta in the movie "Perfect" with that 80's headband.......This movie is really bad....

I agree!
Did Stallone actually think that he sounded good? Or was just everyone afraid to tell him to his face that he is a flat-out horrible singer?
I give him credit for trying to take on such a challenging role, but despite whatever other successes the film had, I just couldn't get past his inability to carry a tune!
Quite the disaster.

And as some further evidence of how bad the director/editor/producers thought his wailing was, notice how in most of the big singing sequences, his audio level is barely audible above the background music of the band and Ms. Parton. You can't hear him -- this is on purpose!

Quite the disaster.

He wasn't supposed to be a good singer. Dolly's character bluntly disabused him of the notion that he was a good singer the night that they went back to New York, and that the cheers he got in Tennessee were because the crowd consisted of her friends and family. And on the night that he sang at the Rhinestone he was booed and heckled. He then stopped singing and tried a different tactic, i.e., to try to win the crowd over by building rapport with them, which worked. And after that he abandoned any notions of a singing career (no doubt realizing that Dolly's character was right) and just wanted his taxi cab.

It would have been a completely different movie had they cast someone who was actually a good singer, like his brother Frank for example. For one thing he wouldn't have needed any help from Dolly's character. For another thing, they couldn't have had the big conflict scene where Dolly's character told him he was no singer. For yet another thing, he wouldn't have needed the build-rapport-with-the-audience tactic at the end. And for a fourth thing, it wouldn't have made sense for him to want to go back to being a taxi driver if he was obviously a professional grade singer.

if he can sing and hes a good actor then god have mercy on us all.

reply

No kidding!

But seriously...the only thing that really cracked me up was the part where he was TRYING to sing "Tutti Frutti," and the old guy says, "That was scary, son."

Oh, and when he was moving weird when singing "Drinkin' Stein."

I'd rather see him yelling "Adrian" than do something like this ever again. Poor guy.

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

I know this reply is very late, but here goes. Sly's singing wasn't great especially at the start, but it wasn't absolutely dreadful. Particularly in the duets he had with Parton, his singing overall was passable.

I just saw a clip of him singing 'Drinkinstein' online... holy $hit, that is pure gold! I can't stop laughing. The moment where he sings his very first key sounds like a rusty chainsaw and a wild boar mating. It's awesome!

Comon he can't sing, but he pulled it off somehow, sort of...
