Alice has said numerous times that he starred in the film on the proviso that it would never be released outside of Spain... and five minutes later, it was on video shelves worldwide. And it certainly doesn't help matters that the only time we hear his actual voice is during the two songs.
The FX were a disappointment not only to viewers, but also to the filmmakers, who envisioned better but did what they could with what they had. The gore's actually pretty good, but the titular Monster Dog is downright silly.
As for the storyline, the filmmakers are Italian, and Italian cinema is pretty notorious for style-over-substance. Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci are both highly-acclaimed Italian horror directors renowned for their bold visuals - but the plots of their films are similarly lacking. "See Me in the Mirror" and "Identity Crisises" were both beautifully staged and could have easily aired on MTV back in the day... if there was an accompanying album.
It should be noted that the same husband/wife team behind this went on to make "Troll 2," which has been christened the "Best Worst Movie." And for anyone familiar with that film, the sheer idiocy of this one ought to make more sense.
