should of used models not cgi

anyone else think they should of used normal models and not cgi

this might of looked good back then but looks super bad now, you get things like star wars that still looks great cos they used models.

I still prefer the low-poly CGI of The Last Starfighter to the physical models of the original Star Wars editions. The formers are seamlessly integrated into the scene, the latters look like cutout figures being dragged across the screen.

I realize that this thread was created nearly three years ago but it's a point worthy of discussion. With all due respect I think you are (or were) looking at this film with hindsight. When this film came out the effects were revolutionary and helped the film stand apart. Remember that part towards the end where the Gunstar spins extremely fast while shooting lasers? That would have been impossible to do with models. The producers wanted to show what was possible with CGI so they did things like 360 degree views of the ships in a single take.

No, nobody else, because we're straight.

CGI had to start somewhere.

Did you mean to say "should HAVE used models"?. Should OF makes no sense whatsoever.
As to your question- does it really matter what they use if you enjoy the movie?.

I'm surprised someone hasn't done a fan edit where they redo the special effects. Like they did with the original Star Trek series. It would be fun to watch. Especially if you could instantly switch back and forth between the OG effects and the new ones.

CGI doesn't hold up after a period of time.

Just take a look at Lord of the Rings, Avatar or similar CGI-heavy films from 10 years ago. These are movies (especially Avatar) that set a new benchmark in CGI quality and detail, and yet after just a few years they're looking worse and worse. Graphics improve, and so our minds get used to them and find flaws.

Remember when a new game came out with "amazing" graphics? I remember playing the original Half Life and being astounded at how good the graphics were. Same for things like Unreal Tournament, or Half Life 2. By today's standards, they're pretty weak, but when they came out they were simply amazing.

I think it would be pretty cool if someone went back, cut out all the old CGI and either replaced it with some up to date model work or new CGI.

Outside of a few pieces of bad acting and poor dialogue, the CGI is the only thing that really dates the film.

No I think it turned out fine and still looks great today, don't see why it looks so bad. Still looks as realistic as you could get in 84, still acceptable today. Watch Space Raiders from 1983 and compare the two movies then get back to me.
