Should Daniel's mom have locked him?

That guy is a danger to society, an environmental hazard, worse than a leaking canister of Plutonium. Watch and see for yourself (and have a good laugh):

He wouldn't simply open a gate: he HAS to kick open it while giving a battle cry, and does not care if there are people on the other side. And that's only the beginning: everything he gets in touch with - he ruins, and doesn't even care if someone gets hurt as a result (like the people in the three damaged cars).

What do you think: should his mom have kept him locked in his room, for good?

Yes. That would have been a good movie wouldn't it eh?
The Locked Up Kid.

If those pen pushers up at city hall don't like it,well, they swivel on this middle digit!

She should have left him in the desert.

She shoulda just sat on his face. In fact I think David O Russell's 'Spnking the Monkey' began as an alternate-universe version of The Karate Kid. The mothers are even a bit similar loooking.
