Punky and her friends were all misfits.

They just were. Punky and her wacky clothing, Allen the nerd, Margo the snob and Cherie, the only black person in the group. But they all stuck together, which is good.

Also, isn't Margo the only one from an intact/nuclear family? Henry's raising Punky, Cherie's being raised by her grandmother, and Allen's parents divorce during the series. Many shows will have one kid who is being raised by a single parent/adopted, but the rest will be from two parent traditional households. I think it's cool this show was ahead of it's time, in a certain way.

Also, not sure if these will help, but it's worth a try:

Margo ticked me off. I wasn't sure why she was there. Cherie was there b/c she found Punky and felt weird being raised by her grandmother/wanted anybody her own age to play with. Allen liked playing with girls more than other boys.
