Female Joes ?

Just how many are there in the show all together?

G.I. Joe had three female members, Scarlett, Lady Jay, and Cover Girl. The Movie added a fourth female member in Jinx. I don't know how many there were in the DIC series though.

Before taking time to think about it I would've sworn there were more than three female Joes (With Jinx being the 4th introduced in the movie), but FH is right. And there were two female Cobras; the Baroness and Zarana.

Supposedly, they considered adding a black female Joe, but decided against it before even going so far as to give her a name. I can't remember the reason though. Maybe it was because the box office failures of the Transformer and My Little Pony movies lead to Sunbow going under and Hasbro felt that she wouldn't do well without a cartoon series to promote her character.

Doc's niece ended up replacing him in later adaptations though.

I'd never heard that one before. Good info .

You definitely have to commend Hasbro for its commitment to making Joe diverse without it ever feeling like they were simply being PC. There was a real authenticity to how the team was assembled. I give major credit for this to the great Larry Hama.

I think that Hasbro's approach was hit and miss at times, but their hearts were in the right place. For example, Roadblock speaking in rhyme was a little stereotypical, but this was the 80s and he had a good showing otherwise. He was at the center of a number of focus episodes and he remained a member of the main cast even as other characters from the first season were being phased out in favor of new ones.

As for the women of G.I. Joe, they were depicted as being tough, competent individuals for the most part. And that extended to a number of women outside of G.I. Joe or Cobra, like Low-Light's sister, Quick Kick's girlfriend, or Honda Lou from Revenge of the Cobra.

Not having read the comics, I don't know what was Hasbro and what was Larry Hama, but they did a good job for the most part.

Many of us thought they were 2 separate women. It looks bad in retrospect that the hasbro toy line only manufactured 1 female joe (or Cobra)each year. There should have been more. That means there were only 6 in the collection in 1987. Some people (the older sisters & mothers of my friends with whom I played GI Joe) thought it was discrimination!

I remember Baroness from the episode "Cobrathon". Definitely a turning point in my appreciation of raven haired womenses.
