How come they replaced the pembroke with the powels

Does anybody know? Just curious.Thank you

It was probably done in an effort to increase ratings.

I think they explained it on the THS: Charles in Charge episode...I only caught bits and pieces...I think it had to do with the ratings...and likely due to the fact that no one would/could sign.

It was a network show for the first season, then CBS cancelled it (in April 1985). By the time they brought it back in first run syndication, it was 1 1/2 years later (December 1986) and most of the cast had moved on to other things. That's why they had Charles working for a different family. Also Jennifer Runyon as Gwendolyn didn't return after the 1st season except as a guest star in a two part episode in season 3.

The story they used in season 2, episode 1 to explain the change was that Charles returned from a camping trip and the Pembrokes were moving to Seattle and that the Powells were subletting the house from them. Mrs. Pembroke had recommended to Mrs. Powell that Charles work for them.

They could only get one of the actors who played the Pembrokes to return for the 1st episode of season 2, that was Michael Pearlman as Jason Pembroke. The character of Jill Pembroke returned for that episode, but she was played by Lisa Donovan instead of Julie Cobb.

I go online sometimes, but everyone's spelling is really bad. It's...depressing.

I'm actually glad the Powells replace the Pembrokes....The Pembrokes were so boring and uninteresting .....The Powells were enjoyable and funny.Pembrokes no they weren't funny.

Sig- The Mentalist,Castle,Private Practice are good shows love them."

Season 2 had the Pembrokes moving to Seattle and they were subletting the house and Charles to the Powell family but I don't know why they decided to make the change in families other then the Powell family stayed for the rest of the series run.

I have found this tonight in the Frequently Asked Questions section tonight and I don't know if anybody else has seen it

Why was the whole family changed just after one season; with only Charles, and Buddy returning in the second season?
The show aired on CBS for its first season but was cancelled by the network due to low ratings. The cast were released from their contracts at this time. When the show was picked up again to run in first-run syndication, some of the Pembroke family members had moved on to other projects and were not available to return to the show. Of the other Pembrokes, only the actor playing Jason even expressed an interest in returning to the series. The entire family was written out of the show and replaced with the Powells, who were subleasing the house from the Pembrokes, who had since moved to Seattle.

Jason did appear on the first episode of the second season, with a different actress playing his mother Jill, to say goodbye to Charles and to tell him (and the audience) that the new family wanted to keep him on board.

And I bet that a lot of the cast was surprised that they brought it back from cancellation as I don't think there have been too many shows have been even after a few seasons, one of which i know of is Leave it to Beaver. But when actors or actresses are committed to another project it is very hard for them to return to something that they already did, and I am not sure if a lot of them even enjoyed doing the series in the first place.

Indeed, the only show's that I can think of that maintained the same casts during a channel hop are Kids Incorporated (syndication to The Disney Channel), Punky Brewster (NBC to syndication), Silver Spoons (NBC to syndication), and Get Smart (NBC to CBS).

reply

Wow and none of those shows I would have seen.

reply

You forgot about Scrubs that switched from NBC to ABC

reply

I'm sorry, but this was about shows that did not undergo a cast change with a channel hop.

"Taxi" Started on ABC in 1978 and was on for 4 seasons before being cancelled. NBC picked it up for a final season 5.

The mains for Season 4 : Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Marilu Henner, Tony Danza, Andy Kaufman and Christopher Lloyd all stayed for the switch.

I don't know, but I like the Powells better. Jamie and Sarah were awesome, plus the old man was funny.
