Why did Emma die so quickly?

"I really don't feel sick", Emma states. She didn't even know she had a lump until the doctor told her at a check up for her daughter. If she had never gone to the doctor, would she have died as fast? I understand cancers can vary, but James L. Brooks didn't write enough scenes to emphasize what she had, how long she had left, what had caused it. It seemed very abrupt. Did the book go into anymore details?

I just find it crazy she died so fast- how long did she have left from the moment she found out? Was there honestly nothing they could do? It seems they caught it early as she had no pain, no symptoms, etc. Insights on this?

I have stage 4 cancer. The only time you feel like *beep* is that when you are in excruciating pain (it's in my bones and I've had to wear a pain patch) or when the chemo kicks your ass so much that you can't function. I was taken in for fluids after being sick for an entire month. Then you 'feel sick.' It's all different for everyone but that's the most part...:(

My journalism professor noticed a lump on the back of her neck while lecturing one day.

Within 2 weeks she was dead.
She was great.

Are you serious? With no symptoms? That's bizarre.
