I thought they were going to kill the kid in the end

There was something strangely foreboding about the kid going across the road to throw the football with Mac. Especially because it was right after the scene where he said "I don't trust happiness". I am glad they let him live. :)

Haha. I got the exact same feeling. I always tend to get that feeling, however, whenever the course of a scene isn't perfectly clear and foreseeable, or when things seem to be going too wellโ€”'Oh no, someone's gonna die', I think.

Me too. The pathos of "I don't trust happiness" is still mitigated by choosing to let happiness in when it comes at you. That's why I think it's great that he plays football with the boy at the end. There's nothing simpler than tossing a ball back and forth with a child. Nothing happier. Very often, choosing happiness is simply choosing to enjoy all the small things and moments.

Interesting. I've seen the movie several times over the years and that never occurred to me before.

That is interesting in relation to the event of Mac's daughter getting killed in a car crash. I had mixed feelings about that. On one hand I think they're trying to depict the mystery of the ups and downs of life, the stream of it all. That's reflected in Mac's dialogue, where he says why did Rosa find him and help him straighten out his life, why did the daughter die, and "I don't trust happiness".

But part of me feels like it was gratuitous to have a character suddenly die, and someone young with most of her life ahead of her.

But if they were going to kill off somebody, I'm glad they at least did it the way they did rather than have the boy get hit by a car right before the closing credits!

I had a similar but different feeling about an earlier scene. When the five guys in the band showed up at the motel, I thought "Uh-oh. Somebody's gonna get an ass whuppin'." I'm glad I was wrong. This is an very good movie, understated but powerful. The news of his daughter caught me completely off guard.
