He didn't think he could get into Princeton. His dad set up the interview with the whole premise, "sometimes you gotta say 'what the heck.'

reply

Back then those were very good scores. I went to the Northwestern School of Business with the same scores.

Those numbers were good enough for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign? Seriously? I know it's not Ivy League, but UIUC is one of the top public universities in the nation. I would think scores like that would mean University of Illinois's Chicago campus.

reply

At UIUC you apply to the college. The Engineering school is as hard to get into as Harvard, the agriculture school not so hard even though you still need good scores to get in.

reply

Getting into Princeton was his parent's dream, not his.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

I dunno if you noticed but this is a 1983 film. SAT's were a lot different back then, the average scores back then were 503 for verbal/reading and 494 for math.

***Use the Force!!!!***

Looks like University of Illinois!

Well, Rutherford probably listened to Joel's comments about saying "what the *beep* and also saw the little "business" he was running that night at his house, so he probably saw some sort of innovative ideas about Joel beyond the scope of some meaningless numbers in the form of test scores.
