Octopussy or a View To A Kill?

Which one do you prefer?

reply

Octopussy overall. Maud Adams is a stronger leading lady than Tanya Roberts, who had no chemistry with Moore, who looked old enough to be her dad. The plot of Octopussy is more exciting than the trite Silicon Valley plot in AVTAK.

Christopher Walken's Zorin is a more entertaining villain than Louis Jordan's Kamal Kahn however. Kahn was enjoyable, but I think Zorin was more villainous. When he shoots all of his men in the cave, it was more nasty than anything Kahn did in Octopussy.

I've always loved Octopussy. A View to a Kill is...not my friend.

From an entertainment perspective alone, Octopussy has AVTAK dead to rights. Then there's the whole "script, acting, cinematography, etc." bundle. I'd be hard-pressed to name a single thing that AVTAK does better than Octopussy. Other than garner pity for Roger Moore.

reply

Octopussy by a slight margin. As much as I like Christopher Walken's character, I though Louis Jourdan's character was much more sinister.

reply

I love them both, their my favorites from my childhood.

Octopussy by a mile. AVTAK would actually be in my bottom 3 all time Bond movies, find it really boring after the Eiffel Tower chase which is about a half hour in, sorry!

For one thing, Walken as a villain is much more effective than either Jourdan or Berkoff - nobody in the entire history of the franchise overacts more bizarrely than these two. Kind of strange, considering they´re both fairly distinguished actors otherwise.

I do love that little sheepish laugh Walken gives before falling to his death.

The fact that AVTAK rips off both "Gold" and "Goldfinger" always grated me a bit.

Got to be Octopussy....Octopussy has a far more involving plot, it's more over-the-top in a good way than AVTAK. Maud Adams is far more interesting than Tanya Roberts screaming "James! James!" in every scene. She's the first Bond girl I actually wanted to die. It would have been hilarious if she had slipped off the golden Gate bridge at the end.

But seriously, what I liked about Moore's films were that they were over-the-top. The Spy Who Loved Me is the best of his films but actually after seeing Moonraker recently, really like that too. Octopussy is on a par with those two in my book.

I read that originally, AVTAK was supposed to be a lot more outrageous with the villains plan of using some technology to literally guide Halley's comet into Silicon Valley. Now that would have been different.

Other points that let AVTAK down were:

- totally under-utilising christopher Walken and Grace Jones. OMG! What a missed opportunity. Walken could have been a lot crazier - he plays that so well. And May Day could have been a real bad-ass Bond villainess. REal shame really.
- the Fire-engine sequence was aweful and the sequence in the mine was boring and uninspired for the climax of a film, especially a Bond film.
- and I'll mention Tnaya Roberts again - horrible! pola Ivanova played by Fiona Fullerton should have been the main Bond Girl. Gorgeous, a good actress and an interesting foil for Bond.I like the Bond girls who are agents and are pretty capable themselves. That's why TSWLM and Moonraker are so much better.

reply

AVTAK by a wide margin. It's important to have a strong villain and Jourdan's eyeball gobbling bad guy is no match for Walken. The whole circus thing dragged Octopussy.

Octopussy easy.
Over the years I think I've grown to appreciate Octopussy more and more.
The backgammon scene is one of my favorites in the series.

A View to a Kill simply isn't as good a movie.
While Walken's bad guy is entertaining, he's kinda under utilized. He's suppose to be this genetic freak, but you never really get to see it. Roger Moore is also at his oldest at this point, and Tanya Roberts is, well, Tanya Roberts.

I like View to a Kill better than Man With the Golden Gun, which is probably the most boring of the Moore Bond films.

I actually think its a tie for me. While A View to a Kill is a bit more serious than Octopussy, its Bond girl (Tanya Roberts) is downright annoying. The fire in the office scene (A View To a Kill) and Bond being chased throughout San Francisco by the police was not very thrilling. But, I did like the chase for Mayday through Paris.

But I do like Octopussy's pace and its more action packed than A View to a Kill. I equally like both bad guys and their minions in both films. Therefore, for me its a tie. They rank for me as mid-level Bonds for Moore, Not as good as For Your Eyes Only nor The Spy Who Loved Me, but better than Moonraker and A Man with a Golden Gun, and Live and Let Die.

I really like both. But i prefer A View To A Kill, but only because it has a great villain, played by the great Christopher Walken...

I feel the exact same way.

A View to a Kill, by a long way. Walken and Jones make a great pair of villains.

Octopussy is too much like a parody.

AVTAK convinced me that a gravel pit was California, whilst Octopussy back end of Peterborough looked like the back end of Peterborough, not eastern Europe.

And Duran Duran beat Rita Coolidge easily.

Between them I like Octopussy the best, as it is my favorite movie of all time (see my 30th Anniversary thread). But I also like A View To A Kill alot, as it is my 12th favorite movie of all time. But I really like all of the Roger Moore Bond movies. And as it so happens, these two (Octopussy and A View To A Kill) were the only two of his that I ever saw in theaters (I saw AVTAK in the CINEMA in Rock Hill, SC in early June, 1985, just after completing 11th grade). But that is because prior to 1983 my family and I rarely went to movies in theaters, just about one or two a year. But that did change starting in the summer of 1983, and for me has continued ever since. I saw one of Timothy Dalton's, three of Pierce Brosnan's, and so far all of Daniel Craig's.

Octopussy.

A View To A Kill had waaaaay too much tedious exposition in the second half. And Tracy Sutton was not a very compelling Bond Girl in my opinion.
