I love this crappy movie

It's just so funny. Where else can you observe and ponder the acting 'talents' of the one and only Pia Zadora, hear such shockingly bad dialogue, revel in such 'spectacular' 'special' 'effects' - that madness scene does it for me every time! I demand a fitting budget range DVD!

Er...whoever scripted it didnt read the book...Jerilee Randall spends a fair bit of time giving herself one with a vibrator because she's 'LONELY!!!'...Pia Zadora on the other hand (pardon the pun)does sod all...

Perhaps its called the lonely lady because it spends so much time on the video stores shelf gathering dust....

I agree that this is a crappy movie but I can't say that I love it. This is probably one of the silliest movies ever made...it doesn't even fall in the VALLEY OF THE DOLLS category of "So bad it's funny." It's just a waste of time.

reply

I can't say that I love this movie either. As far as the storyline goes, trying to make in Hollywood is not worth it if you consider the literal hell that Pia Zadora's character goes through, being used and abused, at one point attempting suicide. What's to love?

I wonder something... at the time this was originally made, did everyone involved even have the slightest hint it would be bad?

If this does end up on DVD, you can bet I won't invest in it.

Even as a thirteen year-old cruising HBO for some boob back in the 80's, I found this film revolting. I still do, but it's also humorous on the level that it's sho shoddily put together, acted, directed, and edited. Listen, I may not know GOOD acting (or directing--or editing for that matter), but I know what's bad. This is bad. Bad taste, bad context, and just downright crappy cast. Even at thirteen, hormones-a-ragin', Pia was somebody that I'd have had to paperbagged--and I still had several desperate years from that point to actually deal with those ragin' hormones.

This movie is downright distasteful. I feel unclean for having seen it......twice.

I should go shower now.

I love this crappy movie, too. And I can't wait for it to be released on DVD with or without the endorsement of Pia (however, a commentary track with Pia and any other willing participants from the production would be most welcome). THE LONELY LADY is bad movie perfection. And I just luuuuv that tacky song (the soundtrack is one of my guiltiest pleasures).

I agree, this is the funniest movie aver made. We muct have a budget release on DVD.

Take it for what it is people, trash camp. If you don't like it, who cares?

Release this on DVD Rhino!!

reply

Oh, how I wish this was "trash camp." It takes itself much too seriously for that. It is just plain turgid. And, as the OP pondered, who the hell was the target audience for this dungheap? I guess middle-aged men who at one time thought Harold Robbins stories were sexy and they also wanted to see Zadora's boobs.

reply

The thing is, (as far as I'm concerned), the funniest of the worst films ARE the ones that take themselves dead seriously. Valley of the Dolls, included. Nearly all of the legendary cinematic misfires are hilarious exactly BECAUSE they think they're making "high art". For example, ever seen a movie called Showgirls?

reply

A movie this entertaining is never "bad." Unfortunately, I bought a shoddy VHS of this for a quarter at a thrift store, and the picture was generally a mess so I had to rely on the dialogue to get me through. Unfortunately, the dialogue was enough, and that breakdown scene came in perfectly. 6/10 stars from me.

I enjoyed it, but the camp/sleaze is what makes it. I can't imagine being able to sit through the TV version which would remove all the nude footage of the adorable Pia Zadora. She was very cute. Had kind of a young Joey Laruen Adams look to her. And I'm a sucker for 80's fashions (the skirts, heels, hair, makeup, etc). Pia was great to look at.
