Other similar movies?...

Greetings!
I really liked this movie. It's quiet, soft and slow.
Can anyone recommend me another similar movie?
Small town with outsider arriving to town. Small movie, etc...
Thanks in advance.

reply

Similar... and as good? Or a small movie? Not really.

But big, not as good:

Doc Hollywood
Cars

I think you should check out a charming little Irish film..When Brendan Met Trudy or another film by the director of Local Hero, Comfort and Joy. You won't be disappointed if you enjoyed LH....

reply

Not the same and not funny but try
- The Lives of Others, it has a similar theme about a man's journey from believing in one thing in life to something more important
- Cinema Paradiso, also about someone grappling with what's important in life and the only film I know with a fantastic ending like Local Hero.

I take extreme exception with your subjective, ill-informed mis-characterization of my listed films as "not funny". I would wager yu have never seen Brendan Met Trudy because if you had ...whatever.. You clearly are a drip with no sense of humor or style for that matter. The ending to Whiplash was superior to that of Cinema Paridiso...
I will have to IMDB The Lives of Others.

As far as Comfort and Joy..it is another sweet, quirky film by the same director that I'm confident the OP would enjoy.

You should stick to dramas and sci-fi. maybe super heros are more your cup of tea,

If you are referring to my post, then I meant that Cinema Paradiso and The Lives of Others are not funny.

I have never even heard of Brendan met Trudy. I've never seen Whiplash.

I loved your recent post about your Scottish tour. I am tres jeaous!!

I apologize for my misdirected negative barbs.

I am passionate about film. I'm a fossil. As a result, I have seen many movies and Local Hero ranks #1 for me. So full of smiles as opposed to belly aches. But my the end of film I feel like I have taken the same trip you recently enjoyed as well as made new Scottish acquaintances.

Whiplash is nothing like Local Hero. The exact opposite really as it is intense from the opening credits till the final freeze frame. The best film of 2015. You should check out the preview for the Irish gem, When Brendan Met Trudy. It is quirky and charming like LH. Just a tad darker.

Again...sorry for my ill chosen remarks.

Wooody - I really appreciate your post. I admit my post was slightly ambiguous (although it never occurred to me when I wrote it) and I always think it takes a strong person to say sorry.

I checked out When Brendan Met Trudy on IMDB following your post and I like the sound of it. I'll have to watch it one day.

I've been going to that area of Scotland on and off for almost 50 years - I first went when I was 6 years old. My parents took us from York on the sleeper train to Inverness with our car. We drove across to the small hamlet of Glenuig - south of the Local Hero beach, but with very similar views across the sea to Rhum and Eigg. We stayed in a house next to a local croft where a brother and sister lived. We walked and collected antlers left behind by the many red deer.

The proper road to Glenuig wasn't even made, but explosions were going off as they blasted through the rock to make the new road. We were the only people on a small beach with a small island off the beach that you can walk to at low tide. A year later we went back and the new road was made and there were about three families on the beach. By the mid 1970s there were caravan sites and lots of people there.

But since then, most Brits go on holiday abroad. And for me the old charm is back (whilst obviously still busier than the first couple of times). It's the most beautiful area in Britain. It has two drawbacks - frequent poor weather or terrible midges in the summer.

So, when Local Hero came out, it was a must see film. I loved it from first watching. I think it would be my favourite film anyway, but my love of the area certainly adds to it. If you ever get the chance to go, then take it.

Here are films that have seemingly simple plots that sneak up on you:

Rocket Science
Rushmore
Big Night (not exactly "quiet and soft", but subtle in its own way).

The Castle - it's an absolute charmer. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118826/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Crossing Delancey (also with Peter Reigert).

A couple of movies come to mind:

The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain (1995)
La grande séduction (2003) / The Grand Seduction (2013 remake)

and maybe

Saving Grace (2000)
Very Annie Mary

And a couple of television series:

Northern Exposure
Doc Martin (plus the movies)

reply

Definitely Northern Exposure..The Englishman That Went Up a Hill tried TOO hard to be similar.

reply

Here's a good one: "The Grand Seduction". I'm sure you'll feel great after watching it.

There is, in the end, nothing that can quite match the subtle comic genius of LOCAL HERO. But I actually think many of Wes Anderson's films are in the same vein, and well worth checking out if you appreciated LOCAL HERO.

reply

That's a brilliant suggestion.

The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill but Came Down A Mountain

A Good Year

Saving Grace (2000)

reply

I totally agree with you about the Englishman Who Went Up a Hill. However, one of the reasons I didn't enjoy it was that I thought it tried to hard to copy LH.
