What's with all the smoking?
Everyone smoking, visual fire, steam in the tub, all eluding to the symbolism of hell?

shareIn the book miriam was antismoking. Fearful of anything that can cause injury. Someone even mentions "cytoplasim of the mouth" when she sees a cigar
shareToo right. She always made very cautious choices (driving a Volvo, always under the speed limit) because she was not invincible and could die in an accident like any human being.
Remember her recollection of her father's death by drowning off the coast of Crete?
It is the only thing I dislike about the movie, otherwise excellent, one of the most stylish films I have seen.
shareI like all the smoke, it adds to the overall mystique of the film.
shareThere is smoking because the film was made in 1983, not 2015.
It's like watching Saturday Night Fever and asking 'what's with all the bellbottom pants?'
Never defend crap with 'It's just a movie'

You're asking the dumbest population ever to understand nuance and context.
shareWhy are they always smoking and drinking in Mad Men?
shareSexual fetixism or just to look sexy(a subconscious blowjob/sex reference-symbolism i.e. dragging a cigarette), to be above death or injuries, and because was 1983 they prob. wore sponsored by Marlboro, I think you can see a close-up of a pack.
And Mad-Men is supposed to set in the 60's, and HBO production's are the most immersive on TV, i.e Rome was cancelled because d budged was too high(Costumes and realistic sets etc..) and had a low viewership, unlike Game Of Thrones...I want The Silmarillion stories on HBO, but New Line/Miramax will deff make like 5-7 movies out of that book.
edit: - instead of / on reference-
Mad Men was on AMC. Not HBO.
shareFrom wiki "HBO and Showtime, both of which rejected Mad Men before it came to AMC"
I live in Brazil now HBO airs the show here, probably on the rest of South America. For instance Walking Dead airs monday on the FOX cable channel..Its very confusing going in that subject, frainly I never watched Mad Men because I was a teen and it seemed boring and now was/is in my way in regards of watching different content or a movie on HBO here.
smoking was cool in the 80s...
Smoking cigarettes was still considered cool in the early 90's. I made the mistake of watching this movie for the first time in 1994, during a week when I tried to quit smoking. I was smoking like a train by the end of the movie. Luckily, I was able to quit later on that year and I've never smoked a cigarette since!
