Very appealing movie...

I just watched it and even though the plot was nothing startling original, I would feel like a heel giving this kind of movie a pan. Hopefully I am becoming more of an optimist as I get older, but professionally criticizing/critiquing movies seems like a waste. I'm really not referring to the average, non-professional opinion, i.e., IMDB, but criticizing a movie as likeable and forthright as this one is akin to kicking a puppy. I'm kind of thinking of Pauline Kael (who in many ways I very much like and enjoy) as I write this. Because I can very much picture her coming up with so many stale, boring reasons for not wanting to like this movie.

Besides everything else, Julie Walters and Michael Caine together are a real treat.

Aye laddie! I couldn't agree more and well said. There is no point criticizing something, when it's heart and soul are coming from the right place. It is enjoyable and entertaining, has a witty script and 2 terrific leads. It is pointless being a curmudgeon about this film.

Siskel and Ebert had mixed feelings about it. Both thought there were too many irrelevant subplots in it. They liked the characters and actors though. Ended up giving two thumbs down.
