Has anyone here been attacked by a dog?

I've never been attacked by a dog, but I came close the other day. As I was waiting for the bus at 6:30 in the morning, it was pitch black outside. My neighborhood doesn't have streetlights and hardly anyone keeps their lights on, so it was very dark.

My neighbors have a dog who is old, senile, big, and unpredictable. He gets out of the electric fence and roams the neighborhood. When I was waiting for the bus in the dark by myself, the dog had apparently gotten loose and started barking at me. Even though he's old and slow, it was dark outside, and he's a dark collored dog, so I couldn't see where he was, I could just hear his barking getting closer and closer to me. Fortunately, the owner came out to get him. There was another time, when I was in 8th grade back in 2002, I was waiting for the bus, and the neighbors out of control German Sheppard, who has apparently attacked a few people, came up to me and the other kids at the bus stop and started growling and showing his teeth at us. Fortunately the owner was there to bring him home, otherwise he would have attacked us, and this german sheppard wasn't slow or senile.

Has anyone here ever been attacked by a dog for real, or just had a close encounter?

When I was around 11. I used to help my dad on weekends at work. We just drove around the city, small towns selling clothes.

I remember we were in a lady's house and there were like three dogs, and they all start barking at us. My dad had always told me that every time a dog came close to me, I should show no fear, otherwise things could get really ugly.

But I was eleven, and I was scared. I start walking back slowly as one started to come close. Then I quickly turned around and start getting away. That's when it happened,, He bit my the back of my leg so hard I started to cry. I had to get disinfected and everything, I spend the next month with two little black dots on my right leg. It was and awful experience.

I have never really been attacked, nor have I ever known someone who has been (despite living next door to a man who bred the most gentle Staffordshire Bull Terriers for years) but I was bitten by one of my dogs once.

I was about eleven and my dog, a big golden retriever, was lying outside on the deck. It was night so I was trying to get him up and bring him inside, but before I did that I leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek, which I usually always did to him. But he jumped up suddenly, swung his head around with his teeth bared and caught me right on my jawline.

Two stitches for me and a trip to the vet for him later, we discovered he was in the beginnings of bad arthritis in his hind leg and when I had leaned over to kiss him, I'd accidentally put my weight on it and hurt him.

That was six years ago and we still have the dog (and two new ones now as well), and I still love him to bits despite the little scar on my face.

I was attacked by a big german shepard a few months ago. Actually, it's a funny story, something out of a romantic slapstick comedy. I met this really cute girl, which I had a hard time to ask her out because I didn't have her number...anyway, long story short, I asked her out on a date. On the day that I went to her house to pick her up, I drove up to her home as she was coming out with a big smile on her face. I smiled back and started to get out of my car to open the door for her to get in, when all of a sudden she started to change that smile for a really, really strange frown. And then it hit me! I started to feel "something" on my right leg! That damn dog snuck behind me and started to bite my leg! He didn't even make a sound! I didn't pay much attention to the fact, first of all because it didn't give time to react; and secondly because I thought he was only "playing". So my date got in, and I had this dog attached to my leg! I turned around and the dog started to let go and bark at me, but then he went for my arm! He didn't bite hard, so I still thought he was playing around; so I started my way to the driver's door. As I took the last turn around the car, he let go of my arm and then took a big bite of my ass! NOw that one did hurt! LOL. The dog was furious by then! He started to RAM my car door, I swear! Cujo, was the first thing that popped into my head. I was laughing out loud as I saw my date, completely embarrassed, trying to dissappear in her seat! She was pretty much speechless throughout the whole date, and I went into Ben Stiller mode trying to keep my cool, while this whole stuff was happening around.
Well, that's my story. No rabies, no tetanus shots BTW. Unfortunately, it didn't work out between us and she kept her dog, LOL.

Personally, I don't know why people want dogs who have mouths bigger than and teeth sharper than humans as pets, no matter how friendly the breed is supposed to be. It is an animal. You can't be sure that it will never attack you or someone else. I don't hate dogs but I don't love them either. What's worse than mean-looking dogs like rottweilers are some of the people who own such dogs - people who are careless with their pets and inconsiderate of other people. There is no excuse for an owner of such a hulking beast to allow it to get loose and run around the neighborhood or the fields to possibly attack people. Any animal you have to tighten your hold on when you are passing other people on the sidewalk or any animal that needs a freaking muzzle (to prevent it from biting) when you walk it should not be a pet.

If such a beast is for home security, please get a gun instead. A gun won't rip some kid's face off all by itself because you can't control it or you let it get loose.

I got bit by a Pitbull-Chow cross when I was 12 or 13, it was on my paper route. The bite was just below the knee, it didn't draw blood but it sure scared the crap out of me. The dog broke its flimsy chain and ran down the stairs after me, I froze in place but he bit me anyway. He stood there and barked at me for what seemed like 15 minutes, every time I tried to move he would bark and growl more with his ears layed back. The owners were home but they never bothered to come get the dog in the house. Finally he lost interest in me and took off down the street. I told my manager at the newspaper what happened, he immediately took steps to have the dog taken away from that family and destroyed. Also they were blacklisted from ever getting the paper delivered to them again. It was good since the family had young kids, who knows what may have happened to one of them.
My parents bred Labradors when I was young. We had one that turned mean because some neighbor kids down the street were always teasing him and throwing rocks at him. He was still basically a puppy when that happened. My dad was the only one that could handle him, he turned on me when I picked up a stick in the yard one day, growling with his teeth bared and hackles up. I think he thought I was going to hit him with it. If my older brother hadn't been there to tell me to drop the stick, I may have gotten hurt. I was only 7 or 8, I didn't know until then just how mean he was. One day my friend from next door came running in the yard when the dog was out, the dog turned on him too. My dad had him put down the next day.

Y'all hear that? We're using code names.

There are more people hurt every year by other people than by dogs. You can never be sure that the cute guy you just started dating won't rape and murder you, or the pretty girl you just met won't shoot you in a jealous rage. So should we all just live isolated lives?

I agree that people with uncontrollable or aggressive dogs (large or small) should be responsible and respectful of other people and keep their dogs leashed and properly contained in their yards.

When I see a dog with a muzzle on the first thing I think is that they have a responsible owner, one who realizes that public safety is important and is practising responsible dog ownership.

I was attacked by a collie with mange when I was a small child.

The collie's name was Shadow.
He belonged to my cousin's neighbors.
Shadow was a victim of abuse and neglect. He had sarcoptic mange and a damaged paw. They put this cone around his head AND left it there for weeks.
I was always appalled at how Shadow was treated.
Shadow HATED children. He had attacked several kids in the area and had caused a large wound in the leg of a five year old girl by the name of Callie.
Surprisingly, Shadow was never put down.

I was seven at the time I was attacked.

I never blamed Shadow. I always felt angry towards the owners.

Everytime a kid in the neighborhood was attacked, the owners blamed the children.
When Callie ran up the steps and was attacked and dragged down by Shadow, they told Callie's mother that it was her daughter's fault.
Shadow had also bitten a boy named Matthew.
The owners blamed Matthew too.

Shadow bit my leg.
After that he never attacked me again.

It's been years now and I'm an adult and I do not hate Shadow. I feel sorry for him and I feel if he had better owners, he would have been an amazing dog.
He is long dead now.
I hope he is at peace and his soul is free from all the abuse and neglect he faced during his life.

About 20 years ago I was chased by a Beagle who just wanted to play,LOL. It's pretty funny in retrospect.

I didn't know what it was going to do,since any dog can become nasty.

my experience:
my grandmother had this female english mastiff, named….cleo! a great dog in every respect. loving, caring, protective, just a great dog and could not ask for a better dog. (the story does not center around this dog's negative actions)

Well, my sister and I were playing in front of my grandmothers house(the adults being inside for a short period of time), just being kids. i was about 5 or so at the time which puts my sis at around 8.
My grandmother's neighbor had this dog (unfortunately i can not remember the breed of this dog, but it was a good medium sized dog. nothing compared to an EM though lol) and the neighbors dog hated kids or something, because whenever it saw us it would flip out. Anyways, the neighbors had accidentally left their side door to their yard open, so when we were playing the dog just straight up saw us and charged while barking/showing teeth.
This is when Cleo, seeing this, must have thought "oh hell no" ran down the steps through the bushes, picked the neighbors dog up by the neck and threw it like a rag. The neighbors dog whimpered away slowly as Cleo stood her ground in front of us. No joke. That yuppy dog NEVER fooled around with us again, knowing Cleo was there. I loved Cleo, she was a great dog. And I'm sure that if Cleo was not there the neighbors dog would/could have done some damage to us. So I wasn't attacked, but it was pretty close and probably would have been alongside my sister if it weren't for Cleo. Cleo also never showed aggression towards ANYBODY, she was a very friendly dog. I honestly just think her motherly instincts kicked in at that moment and would not have let us get harmed. (given she knew us since we were itty bitty babies)

She passed away a few years later of old age. I will always remember that huge ass dog lol I remember her chest as that is how tall she was, thats all I could see at eye level... God I miss my deceased pets, however I have some great ones now as well :)

I have never been attacked by a dog but for some strange reason it's one of my biggest phobias/fears. I'm terrified of strange dogs. When I go for walks (which I do often), I walk on the road beside high fences in case one starts snarling/barking and scares the crap outta me. If it's a dog I know, and know the temperament, I'm fine, but strange ones terrify me. The awful thing is dogs can tell when you're scared and it's puts them on edge so my interaction with them never turns out very well.

I'm the same way. I've owned at least one dog my whole life, but I still get uncomfortable when I'm around other peoples' dogs. One time I was going for a run and this tiny dog came out of nowhere and chased me for about a half mile. I'm not gonna lie, I was scared!

reply

I got chased for about 20 feet. When I was sure I wasn't going to out run it, i turned around and did what your supposed to do. took big kicking steps towards it. it decided it didn't want to be squashed so it turned around and went back to its house.

I've been "attacked" more by my old neighbors cats than by any dog.
More accurately, they got sick of me petting them and rather than politely informing me, bit me.
Its pretty scary seeing a big ass dog running at you, but they usually just want to play. I pray though I never encounter a dog, or any animal with rabies.
Rabies is a serious, DANGEROUS disease. Every registered animal should get the shot for free, if not, you're putting people's lives at serious risk.

My former fiance' was attacked by her own dog when she was only 10. The jaws of the dog were so strong it literally broke both the skin and bone alike, leaving both physical AND emotional damage. The dog, 16 and turning out to be suffering from dementia, had to be put to sleep. As of today, whenever she goes to someone's place, she asks ahead of time what kind of pets they have. If they say they have a dog, she demands it be locked up and out of her sight, no matter the size and breed of the dog. Ironically, she has no phobia of cats, despite the fact their scratches and bites can be worse of a dog, since their teeth are tiny and pointy like needles, and can puncture the bone worse than a dog can. And let's just say that song by Ted Nugent (Cat Scratch Fever) isn't just a song, it's a real disease one can get from a cat's scratch!

Well i've never really been attacked in the sense of being bitten. The only times i've been bitten were accidents. One time my dog seemed to be having a bad dream, whimpering in his sleep, so I reached over to shake him and wake him up, something I do all the time and never have a problem with. He reflexively bit my hand in his sleep, not really hard but harder than he would when just playing. He then woke up and immediately let go of my fingers. Another time, my dog (not the same one) bit me in the balls, hard. He didn't mean to; he was going for the frisbee in my hand and tragically missed. But I don't think i've ever screamed that loudly before or since lol.

But one time some years ago, when I was a teenager, I was out in my yard in the middle of the night. I'd gone out to do something, can't remember what. I live in a rural, wooded area and there are various kinds of animals around here, from dogs to coyotes to bears and cougars. All of a sudden I hear something growling, like growling in a way like it really meant business. There was no moon that night so it was pitch black, I can see nothing, and I have no idea what this thing is. Could be a dog, could be anything. I think it was most likely a dog, which is why I include it in this post, but I don't know for sure. All I know is the general direction the sound is coming from, and a rough guess at the distance it was away from me. I immediately switch into survival mode. I sure wasn't going to stand there and wait for this thing to come at me, and I was too far away from my house to safely run there (plus the direction this sound was coming from was from a place where it could intercept me if I ran to the house). So I do the fastest thinking i've ever done in my life, calculating the odds of reaching any potential havens around me. I decide on the old truck that my dad has had sitting in the backyard for ages, as the thing closest to me. So I run to that and, so help me God, I can hear this thing f-cking chasing after me. I get to the truck in about 3 seconds, open the back door (it's a pickup with a canopy on the back, and that canopy door was the closest door to me) and leap in, slamming the door shut behind me. I decide that since it's close to dawn, i'll just sit in there for a short time until it starts getting light out and then i'll leave. I sat there for maybe 20 or 30 minutes, until daylight started showing up and I could see around the yard reasonably well, and I cautiously walked back to my house. No sign of the dog or whatever it was.

Needless to say, I was a little paranoid about going out into the yard at night for a while lol. I've gotten over it now though. That was the only incident of its kind that i've ever had.
