5-Ton Elephant in the Room

As charming as I've always found this film, can anyone really deny how atrocious the acting is all around? The best "actor" by far is the narrator. Without his voice, the movie would have failed miserably IMHO.

He who conquers himself is mightier than he who conquers a city.

I've thought Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon put on great performances as the parents and enjoyed their performances.

We can agree to disagree. Everyone is entitled to their opinion!

reply

Yes, but you'll find that your opinion will be greatly in the minority.

This was written as a farce and the actors played their parts exactly. The director did a fine job getting these performances.

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

We'll see. Although I'm sure most of the people who agree with me will never visit this particular movie thread.

Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon gave pitch perfect performances of the most natural and loving parents I ever saw on screen. I'm wondering what movie you watched.

I will ask, what do you find so attracious?

I personally felt it was very well done. The movie is to be seen through the eyes of a 10 year old and I feel they do a great job of selling that image.

Is this Idaho? Because I will not limbo in Idaho.

Not a cop out, yet as ppl mention with other facets of the film, it's based on Ralph's childhood memories. I think the acting slots in nicely with that idea.

I totally disagree. I thought the kids nailed it in this movie. Both young actors who played Ralphie and Randy had wonderful facial expressions and were able to chuckle and cry quite convincingly. All of the kids in the school did a good job, too. And the Old Man and mom were great. There's no 5 ton elephant in the room.

reply

Nope the actors were just right. They were doing characters based upon a 9 yo boys outlook on life. The teacher was especially pitch perfect as was the mom (mostly), the dad (was more perfect than the mom's acting), the bully kids were good , the elves, santa, everyone else just right. They were essentially caricatures of people from a bygone time - from a 9:yo boy's memories. Having said that I will concede that the mom sometimes exaggerated a bit too much in certain scenes but didnt take away from anything in the big picture.

reply

There's no elephant. This was a perfectly cast, perfectly acted movie.
