Question about the end (figure on the dock)

Just watched this for the first time, courtesy of the new blu-ray from Severin. Really liked it. But I have a question about the end. Who is the figure on the dock watching the boat go away?

This comes right after Mario's apparent suicide. And maybe like everything else in his life, he pretended that too, and it was just theater. But in the next scene where Desdemona (Lina Romay) is pushing her sister Dulcinea in the wheel chair, she talks about them being all alone. So did Mario die or not?
