Why did Nauls leave MacReady to go check on the thing? It was just kinda stupid.

He found torn clothing with MacReady's name tag on it. The thing rips through your clothing as it takes you over.

Yeah I know but I’m talking about the end and after the blood test. He knew Mac was clean and then he followed the thing after it took Garry. I found that odd..

He didn't understand what he was seeing

Neither did I the first time, it's so extreme

Nauls saw the Blair-thing dragging Garry off by his face -- at a distance, it looked to slow and strange to be alarming, so he went to investigate and got himself eaten

It's the only time I felt a character death was pretty dumb. But I think the idea is that Nauls is attacked by Blair basically 15 feet from MacReady. The original script and planned ending had MacReady discovering the Blair-Thing as it's in the process of assimilating Nauls, so it seems that Nauls didn't stray very far from MacReady. Nauls probably felt he was still within a reasonable distance and eyesight of MacReady before he got suddenly and quietly nabbed by Blair.
