a Sequel?

I bought the DVD of Sword & the Sorcerer after not watching it for years, at the end credits it says "Watch for Talon's new adventure "Tales of the Ancient Empire" coming soon" did they ever make that sequel? I dont' remember it ever being made. Anyone?

reply

Because of the general low esteem towards this film, getting many negative reviews at its release and flopping at the box-office, the producers decided not to make the sequel they were expecting to do.

Personally, I haven't seen it in a long time now, so I can't quite comment on how good it was.

reply

it cost 2 million to make, it made 40 million

reply

Not a bad return on such a low budget flick, they couldent even reshoot the guy being put through the plaster wall that was supposed to be stone.

reply

Then it was a hit.

reply

What actually happened was that the main producers made so much profit from the film that they decided to retire and not risk any of their money on a sequel which basically killed another film being made

reply

Well that makes sense.

reply

F-I-S-T, it looks as though the long-promised sequel will be on DVD tomorrow (!). Let us know what you think!

Don't "Mr. Callahan" me. We've been intimate now... right?

reply

Actually regardless of what the last poster said this movie actually did fairly well and even inspired a series of toys(! that surprised me)
but because it DID do so well the production company that put it together decided they didn't want to make a sequel and closed up..
never seen it but I HAVE seen bits and pieces of it on TV(Spanish channel believe it or not)
and it's clearly a classic piece of Sword and magic shlock from that genre's hayday(the 80's) not that.that is a bad thing.

reply

I read once on a now gone web page called yesterayland.com that they were going to make the sequel and even started to put the picture together before something happened to someone and it got put off. After so long though the sequel was abandon.

What for it though with Hollywood recycling everything else it may just get made.

reply

I don't think the lack of a sequel had to do with box office problems. The Sword and the Sorcerer did make more money than Conan the Barbarian.

reply

I loved this movie, it's one of my favorites of all time. I just got it back the other day, and I've watched it 3 times now in 2 days.

Was there a version of the movie/dvd that has deleted scenes? There's mention of Alana and Elizabeth as children, but I don't recall ever seeing any of them. I do recall the blonde taken away from Malia, but if that WAS Elizabeth, then wouldn't Elizabeth and Talon have recognized each other when they met in the movie?

Were there any Books based on the Movie?

Why doesn't anyone remember Talon, and proclaim him King?

Am I missing something? I bought this on DVD for fun, having never seen it but liking schlocky 80's flicks. It was horrible. Practically unwatchable. There was nothing fun about it. You watched it three times in two days? Are you insane!!!

They don't make movies like this any more, filmmakers don't have the guts and honesty to make a film like this today, they're to busy trying to please everyone, everything nice and safe.

Yes, there is a novel. I bought it from Amazon.

reply

The only book I know of is the movie version, which I believe was written from the screenplay. A friend and classmate of mine was reading it in 1982 and he liked it.
I don't know if there is more than one. Maybe a novel of "Tales of the Ancient Empire" would be good. I'd like to read, or write, it.

But toys, really? I don't remember that. A-searching I will go....

Reality is that which when you stop believing in it, it doesn't go away.

I'm curious about this too. The movie was a box office success. You'd think they would have immediately put a sequel into production. I'll have to check into this.

reply

As much as I enjoyed this movie, this one has as much of a chance of a sequel as Dragonslayer.

reply

I didn't mean I'd like to see a sequel now. I think the time for a sequel has passed. I was wondering why a sequel was never made. With a sequel mentioned at the beginning of the credits (and the movie being a hit at the box office), I'm wondering what the reasons were they never made Tales of the Ancient Empire. Maybe one day Anchor Bay will release a SE and we'll get some insight.

reply

*continuation of my previous post*

I just rented the DVD for the first time in many years, and there actually WAS a sequel planned for it. It is the first thing listed in the closing credits.

The movie was going to be called "Tales of the Ancient Empire", and was supposed to be Prince Talon's next adventure.

Constant google searches turned up absolutely nothing on this movie, so I can only assume that the idea never got further than pre-production. Sad, really.

reply

I remember watching the movie and thoroughly enjoying it and looking forward to the sequel, as per the closing credits that said Prince Talon will return in 'Tales of the Ancient Empire'. I really liked the Matt Houston series, too. Horsley seems like such a likable guy, and that comes across in his portrayals. He reminds me so much of James Garner. I am surprised that he never hit the A list.

Yep there where also 3 coloring books! *I have them somewhere in my attic* If I can find them, I'll try to scan them!

reply

There was a novelisation made, I suppose based on the film. So you can read it, but it is not as good as the movie?

reply

The Sword and the Sorcerer did make more money than Conan the Barbarian.

Wowie! If that's true, it's quite a surprise.

reply

S & S made so much money the producers decided to 'retire' and the planned sequel was never made. Worldwide it made about 100 million, which is about the same amount Conan brought in. However, S&S was made for about 1/4 of Conan's budget, hence a bigger profit.

This sequel is SCREAMING to be made. It's been a looong time since there's been a balls to the wall fantasy flick that was as much fun as S&S. I'd love to know who has the rights and start lobbying for a sequel. I'm sure Lee Horsely isn't too busy these days, he could play the aging warrior Talon on one last crusade with his son or protege or whatever. Xusia (Richard Moll) returns to resurrect Cromwell (ANY Excuse to see Richard Lynch, my favorite bad guy!!) & exact revenge on Talon. After all, in the book, Xusia didn't die...after seemingly being killed by Talon, he escapes on a ship with black sails.

For some reason a few poeple dislike SaS i really dont understand that point of view personally imo the film hasn`t dated that much accept for the sfxs, the acting is good and the story though generic is very good(for the genre) above all the sense of fun even now shines through...im convinced that the same script with modern sfxs could still be a hit and i would certainly go to see a sequel...

Just saw the DVD last night and I loved it!! I'll be 31 tomorrow and these kinds of movies were a special kind of magic back then. I remember seeing an edit version of it in parts years ago on a former local channel which later became Fox, then UPN, and now The CW.

I too saw the end credits annoucing a sequel but right of way I thought to myself "Bet it wasn't made. Never heard of that title before." I came over here to research and obviously nothing.

Also as a kid we were a huge TV house. I remember watching Matt Houston on ABC. Who would have thought the star of that show was the star of this movie. They both came out in that year of 1982. He seemed to have got a new "star" push as this site lists only one other credit before then.

I loved Night Court and seeing "Bull" as the demonic monster was wild!

I'd love to see a sequel too even in this decade. I heard rumors a new Conan movie was being talked about with wrestlers The Rock and HHH brought up.

But Hollywood today isn't like it was then in so many ways. In the 80's there were so many rip off's of blockbuster movies hoping to cash in on Star Wars, Conan, Beastmaster, Friday the 13th, etc. I don't see a lot of "follow up" themes like that anymore.

According to Wikipedia( so this may not be 100% accurate) the reason no sequeal was made was as follows

"The Sword and the Sorcerer was originally conceived as the first in a series of several films, and the ending credits make mention of a sequel which never came to be. Despite this, the movie was actually the most profitable independent film of 1982, grossing US$40 million at the box office. According to director Albert Pyun, the producers made such a huge profit on the first film (its budget was less than $2 million) that they decided to shut down their company and scrap the sequel altogether."

reply

I wonder if Lee Horsley doing Matt Houston had anything to do with it.

Chicomdk's report of the producers making big money and retiring is the reason I had always understood for no sequel. I remember an interview with Lee Horsely somewhere, and he gave the reason as (words to the effect of) 'the physical demands of the character and the script were beyond the cast, who didn't look forward to the rigorous and punishing schedule' or something in that vein. At the time it sounded almost like he was embarrased that the people behind the scenes had abandoned the project, and was trying to stifle the discussion. However, despite the huge financial success the film was pasted by most reviewers (who maybe didn't quite get it), so maybe he was just trying to distance himself from the project to protect his prospects.
I've loved this movie since about 1984 when I first saw it - my friends now think it's schlocky hocum, but I'll talk them into making the damn sequel myself if no-one else does one! I'd love to get my hands on the script they originally prepared. (hey, I'm serious). Never mind Lee Horsely reprising the role in a 'last aged adventure' kind of Conan-the-King way (altho' he was imo excellent as Talon, tongue firmly in cheek), who could we cast instead? Answers and suggestions appreciated...
Just a quick trivia - apparently scenes were shot at a cheap Vegas motel, because it had the whole 'Arabian Knights' look going on.

Absolutely brilliant news just out from AICN ...
Albert Pyun will finally be making the sequel to Sword and the Sorceror he starts filming Tales Of The Ancient Empire in Tunisia in October, no news on the plot or cast yet but if filming it supposed to be starting that soon then they must surely already be in place

I just saw and that it was fun to go back and read this forum- and everything leading up to this sequel actually going into production.. with the same name none the less.

thx for the link, bing, that brought back some good memories, of the book and movie. My favorite line from the movie is,"Don't worry little girl, it won't hurt till I hit the bone" spoken by jailer/torturer, sharpening his axe, I believe. I hope the sequel is worthy and lives up to the original at least. *fingers crossed*
