RE-MAKE!

This film is crying out to be remade!!! Harvey kietel as the cop, fred ward as the guy with the finger missing... donald sutherland as the shrink... oh yeah baby this sounds great already!!!

seriously, this needs to be re made. and i am not talking about a re write either. just some decent actors, and the sick deaths should do the trick. better than red dragon, better than man hunter...

dont mess with this...

Totally.. and you can guarantee they'd then do a PG-13 version minus all the sicko deaths which will apparently 'test better', and we'll end up with another watered down horror film. They just don't do films like this anymore. Whether or not that's a good thing, I guess depends on your point of view!

Why don't you go remake Aenigma instead and just leave this one alone?

Someone wants to destroy what i currently consider Lucio Fulci's true masterpiece? Sure, you can make it more violent and shocking... if you're filming real snuff porn. You can't top what the man did with this film, buddy. The beautiful, eery cinematography, the weird & sleazy music, the signature Fulci hyper-violence and the truly disturbing emotional void at the heart of this beast are all things you are incapable of re-creating. Fulci's film is as much obscene exploitation as it is a sobering portrait of the depraved human condition. Why don't you create your own nihilistic masterpiece [ If you can ] and leave this one alone?

Wow! You actually thought this was Fulci's masterpiece? My vote would go out for "Don't Torture A Duckling." But on the subject of a remake, it's unheard of. Most of this man's movies are so in-your-face with the violence and the subject matter, that Hollywood won't dare touch movies. Especially this one and "Duckling," unless they water it down with a bit of political correctness that movies like this do not have. In fact when you look at this movie, you can see similarities between this and "From Hell." The difference, "From Hell," has killings that are implied and you see the aftermath. "Ripper," you have killings that are in your face and as brutal as they come. I gotta give the man credit for this one. He's got guts. No pun intended.

Unfortunately I've yet to see Don't Torture A Duckling... it's definitely near the top of my movie want list!

Hmmm, i didn't even consider the similarities between The New York Ripper and From Hell... thanks for pointing that out! From Hell is definitely Giallo inspired; it even features the classic gloved killer, hahaha. I'm tired of Johnny Depp, though; he's the same character in every movie: the 'mysterious innocent'. It's become annoying.

Don't Torture A Duckling? Masterpiece? Wow. "Don't Torture Your Audience" is more like it.

OK, it's been a while since I've seen Don't Torture A Duckling now, and it is indeed one of Fulci's greatest works; it combines graphic violence and powerful emotion into a searing cinematic experience. Yep, it's definitely his 'masterpiece'. =D

I usually don't care for remakes, but this movie would actually work as a remake. It should be set in 1982, the same year the original was released, that way it has that old NYC grittiness to it.

I think Harvey Keitel would be too old to play the role though. I could see someone like Tim Roth in the lead. But, like the original, show that he is indeed a dirty man who sleeps with prostitutes and drinks heavily. Keitel could play the shrink, however.

I just wonder who should play the killer with Donald Duck's voice? And who should direct it?

I'm so scared your little head will come off in my hands!
