theres no way i could make that choice!

i have a young daughter and a son just a little bit older, and id pull that nazi twats eyes out with a spoon before he took any of my kids to be killed

reply

Which would have left you dead and your children at the mercy of the nazis. Good choice.

reply

the point im tryin to make is that in that situation id have done everything in my power to save both my kids

reply

I understand. Except you are using a 2011 belief in justice to judge a 1940's Polish Jew being forced marched into a death camp and having to choose which child dies and which one lives.

I still don't believe that Sophie just stayed with Nathan until he kill her. I believe that she couldn't live with her memories and allowed herself to be killed.

reply

he killed her? I thought they committed suicide together.

reply

"I believe that she couldn't live with her memories and allowed herself to be killed." -- Well duh.

reply

My take was that she stayed with Nathan because he punished her verbally, physically, and emotionally, and she felt that she deserved that punishment for making "her choice". Did she know Nathan would kill her? She may have hoped for that. She must have known it was possible. Mostly I think she knew he would never make her happy, which is the one thing she felt she didn't deserve.

reply

THIS!

reply

To be honest I think Sophie was always aware of Nathan's delusions sub-consciously. I think she stayed with him as a distraction for all the shame and horror she had to live with.

After reading whatthemovie was about back in 1982 when it was out in the theatre my older brother went (he never had any children) and this movie haunted him.NOw that I am a mother, if I had both kids with me at the time they were asking her to make a choice, I would have run with both of them and prayed they kill ua all as we tried to escape. I know it c sounds crazy, but I think I lot of other people woud agree with my "choice". And people say there is no such thing as God AND the devil....
If you have a drug or alcohol problem PLEASE seek help. There is help!

"you are using a 2011 belief in justice" -- beliefs in justice are irrelevant and aren't what his problem is. Rather, he's a spoiled brat lacking the intelligence to imagine not being able to have what he wants.

The point of the movie is that Sophie had no such power ... no one in those camps had any such power. From the stupid animation in your sig, it's clear that you are a foolish child living in a fantasy world.

"From the stupid animation in your sig, it's clear that you are a foolish child living in a fantasy world." That is so awesome!

I remember reading about domesticating an elephant (this story may be an urban legend but that doesn't matter for the point) where initially they use a thick chain to restrain the powerful animal but once he gets used to captivity all that's required is a thin rope.

By the time these souls arrive at the camps they've already been thoroughly broken. Resisting is not what they think of, only survival.

Well, davescouse, unlike you, Sophie understand that there was nothing in her power to save either or both of her children. She was entirely at the SS Doctor's mercy. You can imagine yourself more courageous and strong by saying, "I just wouldn't let that happen.", but that is because you are simply not being honest about it. Perhaps you might explain to us what you would have done to prevent it? There were guards everywhere with machine guns, so she could have chosen death for all of them, but that was the only other viable solution. If she wanted at least one of her children to survive, she had to make that horrendous, soul-destroying choice. The SS Doctor was very clever, because he knew a mother's instinct is towards the survival of her children, and she would make the choice to save at least one of them, even if that meant condemning the other.

reply

You are a true idiot. Its nice to say what you would do if you were in the situation when you are sitting comfortably at your computer, but if someone said they were going to basically kill both your kids, or you could choose one, you would choose one. you would pull the nazis eyes out? um you woul dbe shot instantly if you even went near him and then your kids would be without a mother and most likely dead no matter what. you just sound so unbelievably stupid...

Imagine someone holding a gun to your head asking you to choose between your iPod and your iPhone. Now multiply that by 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000...and throw into that choosing to give up either your left nut or your right one multiplied by 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. CHOOSE NOW!!!!
Please do not attack me for my opinions...we're all entitled to them.

I think a lot of people forget that Sophie didn't make the choice outright. She refused at first and it was only after the officer had given the order and the children were being taken away that she eventually conceded.

It's for this reason that the other poster's example of the river is a little off. It's more like: imagine that both your children are being swept away in the current, they both have their hands out and you can reach either of them but you only have one hand free. Is anyone seriously arguing that they would rather withdraw their hand than grab one of their childrens'?

Sophie had a split second to decide once the officer gave the command. There was no time for hesitation and I believe she forced herself to make the choice then and there knowing that she would have to worry about the consequences after it was done.

Well , you only say that because you're not in that situation. If you even tried to touch him, he would have killed all of you three. It's not much of a "choice" anyway, you know both of your kids are to be taken, they are already pulled out of your arms and you can only hold to one. You won't "choose", you would just grab anyone and live with it the rest of your life.

reply

I couldn't choose either but then the Natzis would have killed them both without hesitation. Sophie knew that and impulsively tried to save one at the last second and that she did this is why she couldn't live with herself and survive, it's why she was suicidal despite trying to start again in America. She couldn't live with her choice. It was also her choice to go back to Nathan which was her death. I think the title reflects both choices that killed her.
