Why isn't this in the Top 250?

Why? Why? and why? The film is simply great. It's not just about Polish immigrants but it's about all illegal immigrants in any country.

One of the best films I have seen for a long time.

Oh, it's even about so much more than even that. To say that it's about class struggle, the oppression of the former Soviet-bloc citizenry and their wide-eyed excursions into the outside world, a man's struggle with his own demons of personal success, loyalty to his boss, driving his men, yet wanting to protect them, while at once being both absolutely as despised as he is necessary to them would only touch upon the surface of possibilities this fine film contains. It harkens back to a time, not so long ago, where romantic notions of freedom and ideologies still existed, and there almost seemed to be a nobility in those oppressed in the face of a world they could not control.

I am not, repeat NOT a Jeremy Irons fan. I find him to be quirky in an uninteresting way; and honestly know not why he is as highly-regarded. However, as the main character (both and neither protagonist/anti-hero at once), he shines brightly in Moonlighting, as do the other cast members whose performanes, virtually absent of dialogue, are no less compelling and inspire tremendous empathy.

I have to disagree. I AM a Jeremy Irons fan and I just found that absolutely nothing happened in this movie. I would probably find an encyclopedia more interesting and quicker to look up if I wanted to know about illegal immigrants in a country.

Judging by the number of responses to this film, it obviously isn't popular enough to be in the Top 250. If you truly believe it is worthy of recognition then I suggest you look up some lists made by critics or film connoisseurs because this isn't a very well known movie and it needs a following to make the Top 250. Plenty of good movies are not recognised in the IMDB lists because they are low profile.

I think this is a remarkable film. I saw this once,30 years ago, and it made an impact. I can't say now why it did, but I do remember that we really entered into the lives of the workers, and the felt the catastrophe of the ending.

Really good movie, a surprise in a sad afternoon on a french cable station ("Cine Happy", can you believe it ? Along with The Comeback !), despite its neutral realisation (live alone the two great scenes where time seems to stop, and the poetic ending). Wrhoscheit already said a lot about it and I agree, it's really rich and subtle, even if the three co-workers could have been given more interest, but the movie is mostly about the immigrant worker in general and then Novak. The idea of one work in one house is also interesting : as around them the house they work on for a rich guy becomes whiter and full of light, their lives and the situation in Poland only sink, with brief moments of hope. A great discovery
