Animal Cruelty...

I found it disturbing listening to the DVD commentary track where Schrader describes how the Asian leopard they used for the scene where the panther goes crazy in the hooker's motel room bashed its head in for real against the bars - and they had to put it down. They bought the leopard from some animal dealer who was going to euthanize the cat because it was overly aggressive - yeah, well, it's a wild animal, what the F do you expect? They should have just released the leopard back into the wild or settled her on some preserve. I've always liked this film a lot, but knowing this leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. Schrader also came across as very cavalier about the leopard smashing its brains in for the purposes of being riled up in the scene.

Those tiny cages at the zoo were really sad to me. To think an animal used to hunting and stalking stuck in a jail cell like that. Modern zoos are way better.

Yes the tiny cages were cruel however they were there just for the movie. The Zoo in real life doesn't have tiny cages like that. The film made the zoo look primitive however the zoo was much bigger then you think. The animal have there own areas. I know I Live in New Orleans.

I'm from New Orleans but haven't been there in years. I went to the zoo many times, but never recalled the animals being caged like that. I think it was done just for the movie. I have photos of an albino tiger that was kept there & the animal was in a huge outdoor space.

That story is very sad.

Being a volunteer at Audubon Zoo(where they filmed most animal scenes) we learned about how the zoo was an "animal ghetto" for many years and they made several improvements after this film. The enclosures are nothing like they were in "Cat People" now. The animals seem happy and greet their keepers with much enthusiasm. It's actually now a very pleasant place to visit. And volunteer.

This whole aspect prevented me from thoroughly enjoying the movie.

No animal should suffer on a movie set.
