He was the 80's version of Leave it to Beavers's Eddie Haskell and Jason Batemen nailed it... Derek was an ass for sure, but It was fun to watch because of Jason's delivery.

With all that said, I agree, he seriously did deserve a slap... Lol

You are so right, he did nail it! His delivery was excellent, especially for a kid. The best SS episodes were when he and Ricky and his other friends interacted.

Yep I became a life long fan of Bateman after this character... his recent roles In The Gift and Central Intelligence made me think of the character Derek as an Adult lol

He was for me the only reason I tuned in to Silver Spoons and wish he had been included in more episodes. His next character in the short-lived It's Your Move in '84-85 was very similar to Derek which I didn't mind. I like affable jerks who know they're the smartest person in the room. I thought that show was hilarious and am disappointed it lasted only one season.
