reply

[deleted]

Noone has mentioned another couple of classics..

The Beat Generation
Dirty Movie
Eddie Monsoon- A Life?

reply

Dirty Movie was class. I loved Peter and Nigel on the roof. And when Riks character told Jen she could eat as many sweets as she wanted, she was so sweet.

War was alright at the start with the blind soldiers, I didnt like it much after that.

reply

Yeah - I'll vote for Yob & Funseekers.

reply

Im a big fan, just bought the box-set and saw them all when they originally came out.

In my opinion (and bear in mind I saw them all when they came out and have survived on VHS until the recent (brilliant) dvd box-set these are the ones you HAVE to see (the others are ok but these are the best - most of the new ones just dont do it for me at all)

Mr Jolly
Bad News (both) - get the cd also, its very cheap at amazon or ebay
War
Gino
Eddie Monsoon
*beep* and Detectives on the edge...
Five go mad.. (both)
Summer School
Dirty Movie
Gregory, Diary of a nutcase
GLC

Make sure you watch these - they are the cream and I have watched them all a LOT!

reply

Summer School was great, the magic stick lmao :P

reply

my favourites.....

Detectives on the verge of a nervous breakdown-I so fell in love with Peter Richardson after seeing this one. Did anyone notice when Peter and Keith were in the car skidding around with Shouting George and Spanker that Peter called Keith 'Foyle' and Keith called Peter 'Foyle'?

Five go mad in Dorset

Fistful of Travellers cheques

Funseekers

The Supergrass

Gino

And Mr Jolly lives next door.

great times....

reply

My Favourites are just about all of them really, however ones that stand out for me are:

Strike, cause it was probably the first one I saw and got me into them in the first place plus its great!

GLC cause..............watch it and you will know why! (" BUT WE PAY OUR RATES TOO!) i'm saying no more.

The Supergrass, cause not only is it funny but it has some real emotional scenes in it, plus Robbie Coltraine, the sea wall, two tribes, breath-taking scene!

The *beep* cause I love the Proffesionals and it just said wot needed to be said really. ( do notice that Keith Allen plays a lot of characters with questionable sexualities )

There are so many more but don't want to write all night, maybe later

reply

The Beat Generation has to be my favourite because it is well shot and the characters are hilarious (especially Dawn, Rik and Pete).

"Stop, stop it's too crazy"!

"They say be a communist homosexual jeremy"!

"You really are the most promising illiterate of our generation kix".

Slags and The Supergrass were also teriffic. The Comic Strip have given me and my friends some great laughs!

Did anyone else think that Rik Mayall was very attractive in Beat Generation?

reply

Yes, I think that Rik Mayall was very attractive in Beat Generation! - Love the hair and fluffy jumper! But Rik is always gorgeous!

reply

Except i would say in things like bottom or Mr Jolly. But at other times he looks rather handsome.

reply

Well, I find him sexy in them too!!

reply

I love Supergrass the best but then:

Strike
Private Enterprise
*beep*
Susie
Beat Gen

all are good and Peter R is gorge in all of them

reply

Like the guy above i'd like to answer with quotes (as accurate as i can remember while drunk as a frenchman)...

#1 "Everybody likes the Eagles"

#2 "I could play Stairway to heaven when i was 12 years old... Jimmy Page didn't write it til he was 22"

#3 "Shacked up with punks, dyed my hair all sorts of exotic colours"

#4 "This old river gives me everything i need now"

#5 "Gaze into the ravine..."

...but they're all good really.

reply

Gregory- Diary of a Nutcase (Gregory himself is so charming and sweet, if you forget his morbid fascinations with murder.)

Bad News Tour/More Bad News

Slags

Fistful of Travellers Cheques (Rik Mayall is utterly gorgeous in that one)

The Five Go Mad double.

reply

reply

There's a few episodes that I think are unfairly forgotten and deserve mention-

Wild Turkey
Oxford
South Atlantic Raiders Part One
War (especially good)

reply

I agree. There were some gems as the Comic Strip progressed through the years. Pete Richardson & co are a funny bunch! Can any one tell me anything more about Danny Peacock? Iloved him in the comic strip and I am interested in finding out more about him.

reply

[deleted]

that's the beat generation.

reply

Does anyone think there are any that are particularly weak? I don't think the quality is as variable as many critics suggest but "Queen of the Wild Frontier", "South Atlantic Raiders 2" and "Slags" fell flat for me. However, the Strip are an experimental outfit and never rest on their laurels, so it's inevitable that some episodes will falter.

reply

In chronological order, the ten principal Comic Strips essential to my all-round moral sustenance are:

Five Go Mad In Dorset
The Beat Generation
Summer School
A Fistful Of Travellers' Cheques
Eddie Monsoon - A Life?
The Strike
The Yob
Didn't You Kill My Brother?
Spaghetti Hoops
Four Men In A Car

As for the best one, well, I've been known to give that accolade, at different times, to Five Go Mad In Dorset, The Beat Generation and - ok, I'm cheating - The Supergrass.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

reply

Trevor asks: Does anyone think there are any that are particularly weak?

Well, first of all, even though it was pretty much downhill after GLC, there were more than a few honourable exceptions: Spaghetti Hoops (sublime), Red Nose Of Courage (very watchable), The Crying Game (if only Keith Allen had had more lead parts!), Detectives (good fun), Queen Of The Wild Frontier (underrated - and a great cast), Gregory (quite daring - and they pulled it off) and Four Men In A Car (a bona-fide classic).

As for Wild Turkey, Demonella, Jealousy, and especially the huge disappointment that was Four Men In A Plane, I doubt I could ever sit through any of them again - unutterable crap that they are. Otherwise, I like pretty much everything pre-GLC.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

reply

I quite agree. Spaghetti Hoops is a work of brilliance. I wonder if anyone would agree Space Virgins from The Planet Sex is a flawed masterwork, possibly much misunderstood?

reply

Ooh, I think that's pushing it a bit, Trevor. Sara Stockbridge and Doon Mackichan certainly had the makings of first class, second generation Comic Strippers - and of course Mackichan has gone on to great things with the best comic writers of our generation, but I think that Space Virgins lacks the inventive conceit that lies behind, say, Slags. Ok, not everyone loves the latter, but there's the rub: we all have our own views on the huge number of shows they knocked out.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

reply

This is true, pod, it's all a matter of personal taste so not really the stuff of debate. What does matter is that the Strip maintained complete artistic freedom and control of their work, as should future artists. Looking forward to the new film, too.

reply

i got the complete collection for christmas and have started watching it, therefore i would like to add 'dirty movie' to my list. i also thought keith allen was brilliant in 'gino'.

What's that? You just called me a bastard didn't you!

reply

Along with pre-TV series Comic Strip stalwart, Alexei Sayle, I always regretted the fact that Keith Allen didn't have more involvement. It's well known he's an awkward bugger, only associating himself with The Comic Strip when it suited him, but he's such a superb actor it's a shame he didn't play a more prominent role. His performance in The Yob is extraordinary, and utterly unforgettable.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

reply

I think my favourite is "Gregory: Diary of a Nutcase"

reply

Yeh, Gregory's excellent - and Allen was superb in that, too. There's so many memorable Allen performances: the gondolier in Spaghetti Hoops; his transformation into The Yob; and, of course, Bonehead, as one half of The Bulls**ters.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

reply

o yeah i loved the bullsh!tters aswell, that was quality spoofing.

What's that? You just called me a bastard didn't you!

reply

Watching Red Nose of Courage ()and Gregory again tonight it struck how mature Ade Edmonson's performances had become. He plays it straight so well, and is awesome in Gregory especially.

Aware that I might be overstating my case a little re: the diminished quality of much of the 90s material, I'm having a session with discs 7 and 8 of the box-set tonight. I'm not sure I can face of all of them, though!

The lion and the calf shall lie down together, but the calf won't get much sleep.

reply

Am in complete agreement , for me "The Yob" was the best of the lot , "The Crying Game" a close second. Always felt Allen had a great future , (not that he is in any sense a failure) but don't think he realised his full potential. I had the dubious privilege of driving him to a funeral where he gave the eulogy , spent the afternoon in the local rugby club where he was completely unaffected and excellent and amusing company. "The Comic Strip" was a comedy milestone and an eighties icon.

reply

Agreeed. The YOB is pure comic genius. Keith Allen is superb, as is Gary Olsen and Lia Williams is stunning. Top class.

reply

Sorry, but what'sm good about slags? I just couldn't see the funny side of it at all.
